Tell that to my gut. You get onions in there, mushrooms, etc I’ll be absolutely crippled with cramps, gas, and worse.

I’m glad people love onions. I don’t even mind the taste. But you know what I like more? NOT being stuck in agony on the toilet for hours.

if you are an extrenely picky eater, honestly your loss, thats probably difficult socially and a lot of banger foods youll miss.

making a big deal out of any adults personal preferences? total dick move. Why yuck on their yum, as they say. But ableist? In specific cases where its directly caused by a condition, sure, but lest be real for a sec, weve all encountered people that are picky because theyve never been exposed to new things. The ‘i dont like it’ before ever having tasted that dish, crowd.

and in that way, for example insisting on introducing new foods to children to broarden their pallette? Calling that ableist feels silly and unproductive in several ways.

my brain is crashing out a bit over all the blanket statements being thrown around here in the comments

I know the cilantro example is famous, but as a super taster and having other people with the gene onions are very divisive. For me, anything more than a hint is overpoweringly disgusting and the idea of actually biting into one directly fills me with dread.

Onion powder and garlic powder are both very preferable to the actual substance taste wise.

If you know someone in your life that really likes diet soda and other artificially sweetened things and even prefers it to the regular, they just might be a super taster.

If you know someone that finds wine, beer, tea and coffee horrifically bitter to the point that they can’t even understand how you enjoy it. They may also be a super taster.

If you know someone that complains Seltzer’s like white claw and lacroix are absurdly bitter and completely disgusting. That is likely because they can taste a profile called bitter two, which is prevalent in these things because they are a super taster.

I know nobody will read this and learn to quit removeding at people about what they like, but I figured I’d at least try.

Now that I’m done being reasonable:

Why don’t you stop removedfooting around with weak removed shit like onions and actually use some real fucking spices from India and Mexico? Onions are for mayo loving losers afraid of burning their tender tongues, miss me with that shit.

I’m a super taster as well. Raw onion is a hard no for me, but caramelized onions are like a cheat code for making every meal delicious.

But you’ve got the artificial sweetener thing backwards. Super tasters tend to prefer real sugar and find the fake stuff cloying and unpleasant. I’d bite into an onion like it was an apple before I’d drink a diet soda.

      Also, mayo is delicious.

Really every super taster i know drinks diet, soda like it’s going out of style. And cooking an onion works for people that are not super tasters but ones that are still usually overwhelmed from the small sample size I’ve met over the years.

Were you a smoker at any point perhaps?

I tried some pickled onions from an Idian place near me and while I generally hate onions in all forms (except onion powder or onion flavored chips for some reason) I didnt realize how different they could taste when made in proper ways. I was literally eating them on their own by the spoonful because they were so good, never in my life did I expect that to ever happen. So while its prevelant in Indian dishes, it just feels like they know how to actually use them versus some plain disgusting raw onion chopped and added to like a salad or burger. Like anything there is always nuance, and that day I learned it ever applied to the eating onions lol

What if I love plain sparkling water, black (loose) tea, dark chocolate, unsweetened espresso? Enjoy the taste of plain (real, not American) bread with olive oil or butter on its own? Hate food spicier than butter chicken?

Am I a super taster or the opposite? I joke that I have the palate of a medieval peasant, though I’m guessing they wouldn’t have enjoyed dark chocolate or undiluted coffee/tea.

I thought my parents’ cooking was great, until I grew up and started cooking myself, and discovered I had a talent for it. Now I realize my parents couldn’t cook at all.

Now life is reversed, and I’m taking care of my Mom (Dad’s gone), and I do ALL the cooking.

I still despise onions though. That wasn’t my Mom’s cooking, I just despise onions. And green peppers.

It isn’t about growing up, onions just taste terrible to some people, the way cilantro or asparagus tastes bad to some. I know a guy who is fine with onions, but feels the way I feel toward them about CUCUMBERS, of all things. They basically taste like water, but he can’t stand to be in the same room with one.

There has always been a lot of poorly cooked eggplant going around. It has a ton moisture that needs to be drawn out through salt and/or roasting and frying to make it not be mushy.

Cooked properly crispy it can be delicious.

I would agree, but my sil used to only eat chicken nuggets and canned green beans. In their family growing up, food was not for enjoyment, it was strictly for calories. Both her husband and I have been working on expanding her palate (we got her hooked on gyro a few years back. That was a happy moment for her family).

We don’t and didn’t judge her, we just wanted her to be able to enjoy nicer meals. Her husband is a great cook, so he’s gotten to vicariously experience amazing foods for the first time again. I would be envious, but I get this experience with my nieces and nephews (only four of them have parents who can cook well). It’s a great feeling, sharing delicious foods with loved ones, and also rubbing in your siblings’ faces that their kids aren’t picky when you cook for them.

“you’d better learn to like eating food your body will treat like poison so I’m not mildly inconvenienced” is…well that’s certainly a take.

Why does everyone seem to have this insipid hate boner for people whose restricted diet is due to medical factors outside of their control but nobody gives people any shit for their 100% voluntarily restricted diets?

Where’s this kind of energy when people eat Kosher? Or Halal? Or Vegan? Nobody’s entire neurology is fighting against them breaking any of those food taboos, but they’re generally respected by the same Normies who push for torturing neurodivergent kids with inedible food “for their own good”.

Because anyone publicly displaying ableism really ought to be ashamed. But most of you secretly agree withost forms of ableism and so you’ll never shame people for it. Case in point: you’re here defending naked bigotry because the people being discriminated against are weird and/or childish in your estimation, so they obviously deserve the bigotry, or at least the bigotry is neutral.

Children often just want sweets and unhealthy snacks, and it’s up to adults to make sure they get the nutrition their little bodies require. If a grown ass adult decides they don’t want to eat something, though, they likely have tried it and have their reasons for avoiding it. It’s really nobody else’s damned business.

Absolutely. I would say that not liking onions is a bit of an illusion though. They really are in everything and are so elemental to cooking. I think if people understood this better they wouldn’t fear onions so much. Sometimes fear of onions is also part of a generalized “zero seasoning” palette common among some older white Americans, where even black pepper is considered “spicy” and most food is totally flavorless and usually cooked to a pulp. It’s not about growing up… this palette is just missing out on so much happiness in the world. Being just a tiny bit brave with food is a wonderful decision to make in life.

It is mostly a texture thing for me, and I doubt I am the only one. I do not mind the taste that much, if it is onion powder. But even tiny chunks of cooked onions make me gag when they crunch on your teeth. Absolutely disgusting. If I have to eat something with onions, I will pick out the pieces, no matter how tiny they are.

True they have a sort of gummy texture that pops when you bite into it. I love that personally but I can see it’s a matter of taste. Does that mean you enjoy fresh cut onion in a salad (like bits of red onion in a Mediterranean salad) or fresh cut onion on a burger? Much more crisp texture. Just curious!

If you don’t like onions you should try cooking them in butter on low heat for 30-45 minutes until they’re a deep amber and mixing them with sour cream, a bit of mayo, salt and pepper, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Boom, caramelized onion dip.

Yeah. Raw onions are just about the only food ingredient I absolutely can’t stand to eat. But I love sauteed onions. I work at a fire house and do a lot of the cooking on shift. If anyone removedes about a lack of onions, I tell them I’ll add onions at the same time I add Habaneros. I love crazy hot stuff, but contrary to popular firefighter belief, most of the guys are huge weenies when it comes to spicy.

You probably know this since you work in a kitchen, but a buddy recently taught me that the trick for taking the edge off raw onion—e.g. to put on a salad or burger—is to soak the slices in cold water for a few minutes. Keeps the sweetness and flavor, but seriously reduces the sulfuric burn!
