Fun fact; Hitler is in the good place.

    … It was a technicality.

    Flashback:

Architect: “man this Hitler dude is so awful, whoever kills him goes to the good place, no questions asked.”

I like to think of Chidi’s wave line when I’m feeling down. We’re all just riding that wave until we’re back to being part of the ocean.

Picture a wave. In the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it’s there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It’s a wave.

And then it crashes in the shore and it’s gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. You know it’s one conception of death for Buddhists: the wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it’s supposed to be.

Thanks for that! I need more of the good lines distilled. People miss that there’s a ton of legit philosophy in the show (I mean beyond the scenes where Chidi is directly teaching of course). It’s not just a side bit to use here and there where it helps the jokes or the narrative or whatever. I really fell in love with that, like not only was the show hilarious and FULL of interesting and likeable characters, they really made it kind of a class in (or “love letter” about?) the strengths/weaknesses/clashes to different approaches to existential philosophy.

And they did it in a way that wasn’t ham-fisted, ya know? If you already knew some, you’d pick up on it, if not, maybe you’d pick up a few tidbits here and there but otherwise, just a great show without any of that! That’s so hard to do well, idk, I’m just so impressed lol.

This is why The Good Place is my comfort show. Chidi’s monologue both brakes me and puts me back together. Every moment in the finale is a work of art but that scene on the couch, there just aren’t words.

Every time someone I know passes I watch that whole episode and it helps me find peace.

When AI images took off like a year or two ago, someone made this image of our favorite architect. I stole it, and when I had the lady watch the show, I showed it to her.

People who haven’t seen the show can be confused how TF this relates to architecture. Get rekt lmao go watch the good place it’s like second to Breaking Bad on shows I don’t regret spending time watching.

that’s funny because while the good place is one of the best shows I’ve watched, breaking bad was one dragging slog full of abandoned plot points, inconsistent characters, and dei ex machina, only carried by amazing actors who acted the shit out of a script that didn’t deserve half their effort. 4 seasons too long.

I understand the problem of it being slow for a lot of people, but I was working long hours where the days ran together so it was like one episode a day and then bed, so it all kind of made the months go by faster and bearably.

If all these Christian nuts are lining up for heaven, I think I’ll follow the lead of Chief Hatuey and go to hell to avoid all these idiots …

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatuey

The chief then said without further thought that he did not want to go there but to hell so as not to be where they were and where he would not see such cruel people.

Michael is trying to get Chidi to start a new hobby. He suggested Chidi try cartography, like Columbus. Janet is currently undergoing maintenance and is stuck in fun fact mode. The joke is that Janet is harshing the vibe and being a downer because she’s broken. It is funny.

Facts about one of the worst people in history, along with the jokey implication that he’s in hell, are so woke, aren’t they?

Clearly the non-woke thing would be to celebrate the guy who was so atrocious to the natives that even the Spanish royals were outraged and had him brought back to Spain in chains.

But hey, he “discovered America,” am I right? Ignoring the millions of people who already lived there at the time, along with the Vikings who got there 500 years before he did.

“Hitler is in hell.” Omg that’s hilarious. You so wise and witty and funny, what a clever connection you made in a humours way. No, that’s not a joke.

It’s woke because it isn’t a joke. It is some feel good sense woke people can go “Yea!” too and pat each other on the back.

Clearly the *non*-woke thing would be to celebrate the guy who was so atrocious to the natives that even the Spanish royals were outraged and had him brought back to Spain in chains.

No really no. I guess a non woke joke in this context would be more like “hey I’m dead, I can see me uncle!” “Umm… No he’s in a different place” “no that totally make senses, I can see that”.

It’s not a joke set purely on the premise of circle jerking some social justice statement that people pretend is constructed into a funny joke because people want to feel like they are on the right side. But it does change the pace and direction, which is how a lot of jokes are constructed.

I don’t mind dark jokes and I don’t mind clean jokes. A woke joke isn’t about being funny it’s about commended for having the right view.

But hey, he “discovered America,” am I right? Ignoring the millions of people who already lived there at the time, along with the Vikings who got there 500 years before he did.

There could be a joke in there but it wouldn’t be a good one.

Just to be clear the additional context someone else added means that joke could have had humour in it.

Interesting that your real issue here is about “wokeness” and not people enjoying the idea of one of the greatest monsters in history getting what he deserves.

I’m guessing I know what you think about what “place” Columbus should have ended up in.

So you are just circle jerking over the fact that you all share the exact same idea that didn’t need to be said because you all know it. But by announcing it you can all circle jerk over the fact that you all had the same view?

It’s a scene from a show. The joke is that woman being a killjoy. Yes, the scene may need to be explained, but so does, like, that “this is my hole” meme. If you don’t understand context, then it may miss you.

And, honestly, even if it is “woke,” okay? Like, I don’t understand the issue. Just that you don’t think it’s funny?

Being a killjoy can be a funny joke.

Having something of noteworthiness just for being woke is meaningless.

Like whats the point? Oh wow Columbus is bad. What insightful, thought provoking idea, no one has ever thought that before. It is so original and so funny. Classic. Absolutely brilliant, I wish I could shake your hand.

No it achieves nothing. It is showing your tribe that you hold a view that is already strongly established in that tribe and everyone congratulates you and themselves for holding a view that everyone holds and announcing it to the world. That’s why its woke, its pointless. It’s not interesting or funny.

I think you’re really hung up on that they brought up that Columbus was a shitty person. The joke isn’t even about that. Like you said, it’s well known, it’s the context in which the information is being given that makes it funny.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen Scrubs, but there’s a scene when a character burst into the scene singing “It’s a Beautiful Morning.” Turns out he’s at a funeral. That isn’t funny because the character sang a song, it’s funny because of where he was singing it and how it’s juxtaposed with where he was. What you’re doing right now is, “so what’s the joke? That it’s a beautiful morning? We already know that! This is woke bullshit!”

If I was posting it as a meme? Maybe. I could see myself posting like… “someone waking up at 6 am VS someone already up” and post just the character singing the line. Would I expect everyone to get it? No, not unless I’m posting in a place where 100% of the people are supposed to know the next scene is him at a funeral. But I’d be okay knowing that some people may not get the joke because I didn’t post, “by the way, you see, in this scene, this character is saying ‘it’s a beautiful morning,’ but it is in fact not a beautiful morning! Because he is actually at a funeral, which is so sad! I used this because, while someone who is still awake might enjoy an early morning, someone who is just waking up may not. You see, if you watched the show, you will know the next scene is people looking confused and offended at the funeral. This would be the face of the early riser, would it not! Oh, what a laugh! Please see this link to the full scene and episode, so the joke can really hit you.”

Tons of memes are reduced to their basic parts. That’s just memes. Hell," Loss" is a great example of that. It’s just layout at this point. And sometimes if you don’t see the reference where people sneak it in, you’re just like, “I don’t get it, this just looks like a normal post” and that’s okay. It’s okay not to get the joke.
