Both Trump and his “border czar,” Tom Homan, have said California officials could face arrest if they’re perceived as impeding ICE operations.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom pushed back against threats of arrest by Trump administration officials, remaining defiant as he oversees clashes between law enforcement agents and protesters in response to immigration raids across Los Angeles while also managing an ongoing power struggle with the federal government.

In an interview for MSNBC with NBC News’ Jacob Soboroff, Newsom called Homan’s bluff, urging him to “just get it over with” and move ahead with the arrest.

“He’s a tough guy. Why doesn’t he do that? He knows where to find me,” Newsom said. “That kind of bloviating is exhausting. So, Tom, arrest me. Let’s go."

How exactly is Newsome impeding ICE?

They’re talking about arresting teachers for protecting their kids. They are not talking about Newsome cuz he’s sueing the government. But yeah, go and make this issue about your ego and presidential run bud.

Only the sith deal in absolutes. Idealism is for idealists, aka tools. We are flawed beings, living in a flawed world, we have to deal with flaws. Nothing and nobody will ever be perfect for anything and everyone, that’s not a good reason to let fascists have their way. We can work out the details after the revolution.

Exactly. I’m so tired of watching the left destroy themselves from the inside. Progress is slow. The right are clearly masters of playing the long game, they’ve been building to current events for decades. They’re happy to take the 10% wins bit by bit. They’re happy to make sacrifices for their progress.

Meanwhile the left demands nothing but perfection, and constantly cannibalises itself for not being perfect and revolutionising the world day 1.

You don’t have to suddenly love the guy, rewrite history, or swear loyalty. You just have to know when someone’s actually helping and not get in the way.

The right wins because they fight together. Business conservatives, evangelicals, fascists, libertarians. They might hate each other behind the scenes, but they march in line, and they’ll eat burnt toast with a smile if it gets them closer to running the kitchen.

A rational and situational understanding of the situation gets a lot of spears thrown at you, a lot of people claim left or right, I think for the most part the ones demanding absolute perfection with no compromises really just want a war. We’re in a world of broken boy soldiers with no glory to kill or die for. We’d rather devolve.

The solution to the left cannibalizing itself isn’t to ignore issue with people, it’s to acknowledge those issues and seek out what we can work together on. Random online leftists aren’t meaningfully getting in the way by criticizing him, I’d argue it’s important so we keep in mind where he’s an ally and where he’s an enemy.

This isn’t to say we should turn a blind eye to or ignore the valid criticisms, and I get that people think that’s exactly what you’re saying if argue in this direction. It’s just, wouldn’t it be better if people were currently protesting and petitioning for Harris to do something about the issues they didn’t like her stance on, rather than protesting essentially illegal deportations in their own country?

I feel like it’s kinda missing the forest for the trees.

Working together doesn’t mean we have to pretend our allies have no issues.

Newsom doesn’t meaningfully resist fascism and his brand of politics are a major part of why we’re here. Yeah, I’ll stand by him while he’s fighting, but that doesn’t mean we can’t criticize him.

We can’t afford to see him as a true ally. He will abandon everything we’re fighting for if it benefits him. A tiny percent of leftists criticizing him online amongst themselves will have no impact on how successfully the fascists are able to seize control.

I’m out there alongside liberals who hate most of what I believe, we can be open about that while still working together. We have a common enemy that needs to be stopped.

It means working with people you don’t like but it doesn’t mean we have to pretend they’re perfect, or even good.

imo an important part of discussing what someone is doing to help is discussing how much we can trust them and how they’re capable of helping. That mecessitates discussing what they’re bad at.

You’re 100% right there’s a time and a place. I think a discussion in a left-leaning place like Lemmy with essentially no impact on what action people take is an appropriate place.

Hi, yes I do participate in all primaries and local elections. I also vote on measures whenever those pop up. I think all these are important.

To be productive, here is what I think we need to do:

                  • ranked choice voting
                  • ban PACs and donations other than by people
                  • limit campaign contributions or spending, so that you also dont have an unfair influence from the rich

There is probably a lot more that can be done, but this is probably a good start

I appreciate you not just assuming things btw, thank you

Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, warned Saturday that immigration operations and the presence of federal personnel would continue in the city despite criticism from Democratic leaders who’ve warned it could further escalate protests. He threatened arrest for anyone who obstructs the immigration enforcement effort, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass — though he acknowledged that neither yet had “crossed the line.”

Cross the line, Gavin. Cross the line and we’ll believe it’s not an idle threat. Until then you’ll always be Patrick Bateman to me.

Gavin Newson survived a recall that was initiated by the trump blowhards in Orange County and the Central Valley.

Supporting rate increases so that the board of convicted killer and “power company”, PG&E didn’t have to face any actual penalties for killing people. Adamantly opposing any wealth tax. Putting significant support behind RTO/quiet layoffs.

Bloviate - talk at length, especially in an inflated or empty way.

Instantly added to my lexicon. There’s another word I’ve often used when I should have been using this one, because the other word (malapropism) isn’t exactly what I am meaning a lot of the time but it was the closest thing to what I was trying to convey (someone talking out of their ass in a way that tries to sound intelligent when it isn’t).

Honestly, short of some miracle undoing this whole mess, this was a flavor of outcome I was quietly hoping for. At some point, politicians are going to realize - much like the president’s base - that they’re going to lose power unless they mount some kind of opposition. For the very worst ones out there, power is kind of their whole bag. Take it away and they get very angry; they may even do something about it. It’s kind of the tacit driving force behind any “checks and balances” scheme: power-hungry bastards trying to out-power-hungry-bastard each other. In a gross way, we kind of depend on it.

What is it about important blue states, like California and New York, that keep voting for corrupt pieces of shit(Eric Adams)‽ Again and again¿ Like I’m an out and loud proud social democrat in probably the reddest state, but it gets exhausting trying to juxtapose that with trying to tell people how corrupt every single repuglican is.

$0.02: good people know enough to not take the job, let alone run for it. It’s expensive to run for office, doesn’t pay enough, eats up your life, you’re constantly advertising to stay employed, and your co-workers are all politicians. It’s very much a “I offer myself as tribute” kind of a situation, even for extraordinary people.

Meanwhile, a corrupt person knows that it’s worth all the trouble if you convert political power into (illegal) money.

He was major of a place for a while, he said it sucked because you can barely accomplish anything, ans if your staff doesn’t like your ideas they work against you in subtle ways like not bringing you the relevent information on topics or reports etc. Basically clandestine backstabbing all term

The national guard is under his command. The President needs his permission to be mobilized federally, with certain exceptions that require them to be used against an external enemy.

He should have gone to the NG and ordered them to stand down. Because their current orders were doubley illegal.

Yeah, I guess I was thinking of this from the top down constitutional perspective of it (and even then I probably should have said taking ICE’s side or the federal government’s side), but meanwhile on the ground the LAPD is doing the LAPD thing and the National Guard is doing the National Guard thing

      Hi, actual leftist here.

Is Newsom a garbage person, a slimy politician with no real core beliefs, who just tight rope walks a balance between the desires of his constituents, and his wealthy donors?

      Yes.

Can garbage people actually do the right thing from time to time, be on the right side of an issue?

      Also yes.

Keep it up Newsom, this is the kind of ‘fuck you, make me!’ energy/vibe/whatever we need to actually have a shot at resisting Trump from within the system, instead of basically being completely on our own.

Maybe this will be a genuinely radicalizing experience for him.

I would love for there to be an actual, formal, ‘legitmate’ body or group of people actually, effectively, resisting Trump, instead of wringing their hands and complaining about how powerless they are.

Politics is the game of acquiring and wielding power.

Sitting down and crying about how you don’t know what to do is removeding yourself, and makes all your supporters into simps for a removed.

Sorry to use the colorful language, no kink-shaming if thats your thing in the bedroom, but that is how I feel, and being a simp in the context of politics and governance is… not the place for such behavior.

If on the other hand we get some actually useful resistance from ‘legitimate’ officials, well then that means there might be a chance at ‘legitimately’ reaisting… but its going to mean a whole lot of libs are gonna have to learn how to actually play hardball the way Republicans have been the last 20 years… the way Gavin is here.

        Yes

Got any good news articles about this? I don’t see much about him except his podcast and headlines like these. But nothing ever dives into who he actually is and some might call him a “garbage person”.

He’s been a proponent of a lot of right-wing talking points and stupid policies that run against what most left-leaning people in California want. Most recently he endorsed a bill that would require an absolutely criminally obtuse asset-check to get disability insurance in the wealthiest state in America, a state which is wealthier than most countries.

He doesn’t support trans athletes, he has worked to end homeless encampments without providing them an option, he’s been anti-union and snuggles with people like Charlie Kirk.

That’s just what I know for myself without looking up sources, just what I remember as I have followed Cali news.

But all that said, yes, as /u/[email protected] said, you can support someone when they are fighting for what you believe in, and despite my knowledge that Newsom is a giant snake, he’s doing and saying the right things here and I support it.

A lot of people who aren’t terminally online would be shocked at just how divisive this issue is among leftists, but I am quite sure that’s just because leftists/progressives are so deprived of being able to have intellectual debates, since you can’t have intellectual arguments with the right, that they’re forced to infight just to exercise mental capacity to some degree.

They want us to focus more on the Dems than the people actually implementing fascism. They want to manipulate the next election, and they’re starting early. It will get worse.

“Comfortable, wealthy neoliberal who does interviews with and works with fascists and is not personally targeted by them bravely says some macho stuff while his state’s residents get disappeared and shot at.” Is the actual headline here, but Gavin is hoping that a little grandstanding will let him make a presidential run later without actually doing anything for his constituents. He should be doing so, so much more than he is and yet so many people seem desperate for a win that they are willing to call this a victory rather than like, a potential signal that he might, potentially, care about his citizens a little, hypothetically.

Hi all, I hope people hear this and the post is not hidden. This is an insecure system, and talking on here about things you want to or will do will be used by the regime.

Please take this as it is meant. I fully appreciate the anger and the pain you are all feeling, and you are totally right to fight, but you must fight smart.

DO NOT LET YOUR ANGER GET THE BEST OF YOU. If this goes the way it’s looking like it might, direct fights with whatfever is left of the States’ forces is suicide, and the good guys need all the boots on the ground you can muster.

There are many veterans of the war on terror who are literal experts on the tactics needed to win this; seek them out.

Assume all coms are monitored because they are. Look after each other, people.

A friend who knows the score.
