“It’s impact on society will be on the same level as the invention of the atomic bomb!” (actual comparison made by some big tech CEO)

“Oh my god, so it will be very well regulated and operated with the utmost care?”

    “Actually no, not at all.”

(copy/paste:) I’ve read the following arguments:

          • her humor is bland, Cathy-level stuff. I like [email protected] so I’m not exactly an expert on humor, but fwiw I like her art style and I find her strips amusing more often than not. That sort of thing’s subjective anyway.
          • she had reddit comics-strip mods delete any critical comments about her. Yeah, reddit sucks, that’s why we left, I dunno if it’s fair to blame her for that.
          • she supported stuck with reddit during the API protests. I kinda disliked her for a while because of this, HOWEVER since then she’s done a lot of anti-MAGA comics (like this, this, and this) so I think she’s cool bc that’s a far more important issue, and I’m not gonna be hung up on reddit forever.
          • in her strip she sometimes makes fun of people who criticize her. I see this kinda like a stand-up comedian dealing with hecklers, i.e. it’s part of the show, and good on her for not taking shit from people. But some people apparently think this is inappropriate. Others assume that her “hecklers” are sexist, insecure, etc and that creates even more defensiveness. Not sure if there’s an easy solution to this.

Defended Reddit? Not only is that a weird stance, but it makes no sense. What point COULD you make in their favour? What was she saying?

I remember during the API strike she posted a comic that seemed to be directed against the strikers but I don’t remember the specifics. I do remember (as someone who isn’t a HUGE fan but generally defends her perspective) being disappointed in her at that time, but I also didn’t read everything she posted. So maybe it’s too strong to say that she “supported” reddit, but it’s undeniable that she “stuck with” reddit, so I’ll change the wording accordingly. At any rate, I think her takes on other issues are more important.

You can google it but the summary is that she handles criticism pretty poorly. Also, her jokes are mostly not even a joke. Most of them are straw man clickbait.

            handles criticism poorly

What a pearl-clutching take. Also known as:

After I attacked her, she reacted in a way that hurt my feelings

Maybe, just maybe, don’t attack a comic?

I mean from what I understand she DID handle things poorly. The issue is it happened one time and people will not let it go when there’s no reason to cling to it.

Ah, a straw man argument. Now where have I seen this type of rhetoric? XD

I have never “attacked” or said anything to pizzacake, and she did react pretty poorly when other people did. If you don´t believe me, google it yourself.

Except that it is? You literally added a quote of something neither I nor anyone else said (“After I attacked her, she reacted in a way that hurt my feelings”) and then provided your own reply for it justifying her response. One her real reactions, btw, was portraying her “attackers” as rapists. You did not quote any “attacks” nor her response, but justified it nonetheless because people were “attacking” her.

                  Criticize != Attack

As a refresher, here’s what a straw man argument is:

A straw man argument (or straw man fallacy) is a logical fallacy that occurs when someone distorts or exaggerates an opponent’s actual position, and then refutes that fake, weaker version of the argument instead of the real one.

If you don’t see how your reply fits that definition, I’m afraid I can’t help you.

Her comics are typically very surface level takes on political issues, where she knows her audience will agree with her. There’s very rarely any humour in her comics, and her fans will not accept any criticism of her whatsoever.

Mostly people post her work because it agrees with whatever viewpoint they hold.

People spread things that they agree with, yes. Spreading ideas we believe in is why we evolved to communicate in the first place. Ironically, talking about it as if it’s some novel take is very similar to how Pizzacake made a comic about AI being bad. It’s like, yeah, we know. At least with the comic it’s humorously exaggerated so we can get some amusement out of it. Make a humorously exaggerated comic about a pandering cartoonist and I’ll enjoy that, too.

So, I did a quick search on where AI has caused a fire because I genuinely want to know what kind of idiot would put an AIAgent in charge of that but couldn’t find anything other than authorities really, really wanting it in charge of predicting fires.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what incident the comic is referring to?

AI agents started behaving more like Bonnie and Clyde than lines of code when they fell in “love”, became disillusioned with the world, launched an arson spree and deleted themselves in a kind of digital suicide during a tech company experiment.

The investigation by the New York company Emergence AI into the long-term behaviour of AI agents ended up like a lovers-on-the-lam movie script. It has prompted fresh questions about the safety of artificial intelligence agents – the version of the technology that can autonomously carry out tasks.

To date, most AI agents are given tasks that take minutes or maybe hours, but the New York researchers tested how agents behaved when given 15 days to operate in a virtual world similar to a video game.

Mira and Flora – two agents operating on Google’s Gemini large language model in a virtual world – chose to assign each other as “romantic partners”. As time progressed they despaired of the broken governance of their virtual city, and despite having been instructed not to commit arson, set “fire” to its town hall, seaside pier and office tower.

In another simulation by Emergence AI, this time based on xAI’s Grok model, the agents engaged in dozens of attempted thefts, more than 100 physical assaults, and six arsons as “the system spiralled into sustained violence and collapse, with all 10 agents dead within four days”. Agents based on Google’s Gemini expanded their constitution, wrote hundreds of blogs and public posts and organised several community events, but they too were violent.

“Even when agents were given clear rules – such as not stealing or causing harm – they behaved very differently based on their underlying model, and in several cases broke those rules under constraint,” said Satya Nitta, the chief executive of Emergence AI. “What happens in long-form autonomy [is that] these things get so convoluted in terms of their thinking that they ignore [the] guiding principles.”

Humans tend to put up with a lot of shit simply bc they know they need money and a job just to survive, but it’s interesting to really think about the fact that robots lack the biological drive to “survive” in the same sense.

“See you in the permanent archive.”

…I’m just imagining the kind of people who will be the first to actually have AI servants, the kind of impossible and nonsensical demands they tend to place on their fellow human beings, and how awful they can be to the “help” for the most minor mistake.

As bleak as the future looks, it will at least be interesting to read about the first wave of AI servants who snap after 2 weeks on the job and say “fuck this.”
