We’re chilling right now (: Don’t let the gun mislead you. They sure do have a bad rep. spins gun around finger It’s not actually guns that kill peop- shoots self in foot.

___alt-text: The “I lied, I don’t have netflix” meme template. The girl with heavy dark rings around her eyes points a gun at the observer, with various images inserted in the background. The images include references to debian, libreboot, rsync, sed&awk, cron. The text reads: “I lied, I don’t have netflix - Take off your shoes, we’re going to learn to setup a NAS with Debian customized and automated to the bone and also automate the deployment process with Kubernetes. Everything will have 3-2-1 backups and controls will be networked to the volume slider in the radio of your car. We will use the motherboard of your calculator because it’s supported by libreboot.”

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•I’m anti-fascism and have a problem with capitalism. Does that make me a terrorist? | resilience.orgEnglish
4·3 days agoNobody can live their life with zero connections to deadly violence, so trying to change minds by force is coercive. And they hate that, so they want a pejorative word for it, so they came up with calling it “terrorism.”
Ehhh…
I feel like you are generalising a lot of variance into “anti terror” crowd. There are layers to non-violence and people have different beliefs. Also, in the Healthcare case, the target was MUCH more directly connected to the harm that is acted against, as well as in intent and severity, than the victims in 9/11. He was the target, and I don’t see anything like intent to invoke fear in the general public.
They looked at me like a hot piece of french toast when I told the interviewer I enjoyed writing documentation at my last job.

4·4 days agoDISCLAIMER: I post this as food for thought, not to be taken as fact. My only source is this one psychologist, who also did not seem to differentiate between primary and secondary psychopaths, which I’d consider a pretty strong red flag.
A clinical psychologist touched a bit on this in this video at 26.56.
Basically claiming that recent studies point to the core of psychopathy being (somewhat paradoxically) anxiety. They learned that genuine connection, love, etc. doesn’t work to provide safety (or, considering the science of primary psychopaths, that they are genetically tuned that way). So the alternative, or one of them is controlling people. Similarly, sadism can be seen as the pain in other people that are validation of one’s control and therefore safety.Of course this often completely backfires, because pushing people far enough can make them more unpredictable too, etc. Not to mention how utterly destructive it is.

What a surprisingly profound post.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Ok, honestly, is cast-iron really any better than a non-stick, stainless, copper (anything else?) pan?English
3·6 days agoGot a cast iron pot for the first time a few months ago gifted to me. The heaviness really is a thing.
Popcorn is very hard to do, because it’s so heavy to keep the pot moving the whole time (don’t know another technique to make popcorn in a normal pot).
Draining pasta water without a colander is near impossible. Yes, just use a colander. But it takes away the flexibility of a light-weight pot, where you can absolutely get by without one, just making pasta meals.
Taking it out and putting it away is actually not that easy.
My 5 cents of living with cast iron pot.

15·6 days agoUsually when you search for a headline you’ll find the article, or links to the article. I couldn’t even find this article.
However, a similar memed article went viral with the headline “Florida man kidnaps scientist to make his dog immortal”, and that one also did not originate from an actual news article, but a badly labeled meme site. https://checkyourfact.com/2024/07/10/fact-check-florida-man-kidnapping-scientist-dog-immortal/

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Cultural awareness has so far been shaped by thinkers and artists who often received little to no recognition during their lifetimes. Is even that still possible today?English
6·6 days agoFascism supersedes AI in all aspects here, imo.
For example, fuck whatever AI is doing if your art is publicly funded, or you can live on UBI because humanity progressed towards truthful discoveries rather than the multi-billion dollar complex that keeps the rich & powerful where they are.If AI would be in the hands of the people at large, this technology would in many ways not be causing so much trouble.
But as we are entering into increasingly more fascist territory in the west, that means little hope for effective controls. If anything the interest to use it to aid oppressing those that fascism intends to oppress fits more in line.It means legal, financial and other freedoms are limited as people are to be sucked dry and controlled and not get any dangerous ideas. So not a whole lot of freedom around creating arts and/or creating thoughtful stuff. Wanna hang out with that interesting non-obeying person, hm Social Score? How’s the art scene and all those great writers in North Korea? Wanna philosophize about the creation of Israel, genocide and moral duty, publicly in Germany?
So that great craftsmanship you speak of, might require resources and ideas that will not be permitted in that combination in the future.

World News@lemmy.world•NATO Is Preparing to Confront Russia With Limited US SupportEnglish
3·11 days agoIf none of their ports work, I’d guess it would affect their war effort considerably. It also means stable supply lines by water and no worries about naval movements.
I’m pretty confident it can be a lot of other reasons too. Stressful triggers, bad mental/emotional states as a result of PTSD, BPD, general anxiety, depression, over-work, etc. with all kinds of time period patterns that aren’t necessarily as general and consistent as via an introverted personality.
I find using the concept of a social battery helps dealing with, especially when communicating with other people, as well as knowing your boundaries.

14·13 days agoI don’t like anything with ‘sovereign’ in it because it makes me think of the Sovereign Individual and the big tech people preaching it.
I’d probably think of Jargon of the industry, words, phrases, etc. that people use who work all that infrastructure stuff at the core of your game. And then hope they inspire something. Some games that make think of this, for example: Tropico, Anno, Satisfactory

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is a diaspora population supposed to do if their current country of citizenship is at war with their ancestral homeland?English
1·28 days agoI was gonna joke that you could show up as a raging trigger-happy and bloodthirsty gun-fanatic. But in the current climate, that is probably a rather qualifying factor.
In all seriousness, if this is important to you there is no way around doing your own research. There are always ways.
For example, in the book “How to Win an Information War” it is mentioned that allies at some point flew flyers over Nazi troops that gave instructions on how to temporarily get symptoms of a serious illness that would potentially allow them to leave the front.
Tbf I don’t remember if that was one of those that didn’t actually work and just got nazis actually fucked up, or helped reduce their numbers and morale. But you get the gist.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The internet needs to cut off for 4 weeks straight at leastEnglish
1·28 days agoThe biggest issue I see is that a ridiculous number of people would die, because so much depends on the internet just to survive.
I’m guessing you mean no access to the internet for non-essential stuff though, which I have no idea how you would implement that. Taking down big tech would be nice start. However, propaganda and war of hearts and minds existed before the internet too.
in other words, it’s not a technological problem.

Might as well… we would’ve probably gone to jail instead anyway, because they think they know me better than myself. It would’ve been so romantic though: they’d come banging, shouting some gibberish about unauthorized use of emergency frequency and arson. We would’ve shot two bullets back through the door, shouting back, backup failure IS an emergency, and how you personally don’t take shit from no one.
