The cursed city where Deadlock’s battles take place just got even spookier than it already was in the City Never Sleeps update. Valve’s second major overhaul for the invite-only MOBA marks another major step in its pseudo-early access development, giving it a much stronger visual identity than it had before, six striking new heroes, and a massive list of tweaks to how it plays.

Deadlock’s entire map has been redecorated into three distinct themes: a bright city center, a haunted university, and a shadowy stock exchange. All the buildings and creeps that inhabit each street have been redesigned to fit in. There are pickle jars with hands growing out of them lurking in the heart of the map, sentient stacks of books in the right lane, and slimy trashbag monsters in the left lane.

Squeezed between it all are four districts with their own identities, like a theater district infested with literal stage hands pulling the strings on steampunk-style automatons. Atop the Chinatown district is a bell tower where teams can fight over a fountain of souls to try to get a currency advantage in a tight match. Even the wooden crates that players smash for resources are now padlocked and bolted shut.

It’s a whole new playground that will take some time for players to fully figure out. In the meantime, Valve has prepared six new heroes who will be released based on a player voting system, just like the previous set. My money’s on the Rat King taking the lead because, well, he’s the Rat King, a crowned rodent that began as a fan concept a year ago and quickly became a meme in the community.

I’m genuinely shocked because I think Deadlock is probably the tamest MOBA I’ve ever played. Like I think I’ve come across maybe like 2-3 ragequits across my ~80hrs and zero slurs. Compared to like Marvel Rivals where you’re lucky if you even get a match with another human being, and if you do the chances of them being a massive dickhead rise exponentially.

I really love playing multiplayer games but every community is so awful that I always bounce off. Just once I want someone to make a competitive multiplayer game that isn’t toxic. Surely it has to be possible

The bots I play against with buddies are very nice! That’s mostly how I also played OG Overwatch and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much. I imagine once you can mop the floor with them it’s not as fun as actual people, but most of the reason I play is because the art is pretty and the characters are neat. Street Brawl is also fast paced enough that if you run into some toxic assholes you aren’t with them for long. Kind of annoying to get access to it if you don’t have friends with a spare key though

I played around 900 hours of deadlock and when they dropped the new map, i played bots for tge first time to see the new map and try a new hero. I did not enjoy it at all. It almost had nothing to do wit deadlock imo. I didn’t get to see anything of the map, because the bots just attack relentless and they just ignore walkers and guardians. You have to fix every wave, because your bots do not care at all. I ened up 47/2 and lost a 40 min match, because the only one who got kills beside me was bebop when he had ult. If he didn’t, he apparently just tapped his laser didn’t realuse that it has a wind up period. You hace to do midboss by yourself, but it’s still pointless, because your bots just run into a walker.

I think the new standard mode is so much better than playing bots.

In the patch notes they advertized a new system that gives 30-day comms bans instantly during the match, and it even names and shames, and people have been comically congenial in my (admittedly limited number of) games. If I was a new player I would still probably turn off chat for the first hundred games or so.

I’ll give it some time to see if the horrible matchmaking where playing the game became instant lock death, waiting to respawn. Not fun at all.

PvE was much better as it removed the toxic factors and more balanced games but since they don’t develop that it became boring.

Which is unfortunate because when it works it’s fun and there is a concept there, but the focus on sweatlord EeeeeeeSpurtz rather than the base bones I think is what destroys it for me right now.

I only played standard since they released that and my matches have beet way better and dare i say it, not toxic at all

    • The toxicity isnt too bad imo. You get some shitty folks but they’ve got one of those toxic player jails where you get matched with other people who have been reported or quit games or whatever until you’ve won enough matches to get promoted out. Wish PVE was a bit better tho

  • I like it, but the map being so dark makes it hard to see shit anymore. There’s loads of visual clutter and it’s a bit much to take in! Plus, it means my laptop is just barely able to keep it above 60fps 😮‍💨
