  • I think this is likely. I could see the US starting a proxy somewhere in South America too but nothing feels particularly primed for it. Taiwan definitely seems like the next major bet.

If it’s not Taiwan, it might be somewhere else that is regional specifically to keep China busy. India, something like that. The US values Taiwan extremely highly because of TSMC so they may decide that starting a war there is too risky.

  • I used to think that these sorts of people were hurting the cause but over time I realized no, not really. Mostly because the kinds of people who engage with that sort of dialogue try to use it as a weapon, saying things like “see THIS communist says x y or z and that means YOU’RE saying x y or z too.” Then you try to engage with that conversation and one of two things happens. Either you explain no, that isn’t what we believe and here’s why and they listen, or they shout NO TRUE SCOTSMAN at you and pretend like if anyone ever identifies as anything, that means everyone that also identifies as that must be the same. The former group isn’t negatively impacted by patsocs because the former group aren’t fucking stupid, and the latter group will never engage with you or anyone seriously no matter what you do, so why bother wasting your time.

This lesson helped me a lot once I realized it. Only engage with people who will actually earnestly engage with you. The others are someone else’s problem or require a different organizing strategy.

  • There is nothing wrong with liking sports, sports are cool and fun and can be healthy social events. For someone who is a casual sporting event enjoyer, sportsball discourse is kinda rude and minimizing of their interest.

There is a lot wrong with defining your entire identity around sports and acting like a child throwing a temper tantrum when others don’t also base their entire identity around sports. It is for those people that sportsball discourse is not only suggested, it is mandatory, because those people should be shamed into doing something useful with their lives. This is doubly true for people who base their entire identity around some specific subset of sports and who reject any sport outside of that subset. If smacking ball with stick across grass can be a sport then pretty much anything can be a sport.
