Game OSTs I’ve gone out of my way to acquire at some point or another:
Diablo II (I think it was specifically the new Tristram song that made me do it, but all the hours I put into that game led to all of them being on my playlist at the time)
FFVII (haven’t played the game in decades but I still randomly start humming or singing some of these songs)
Zelda: OOT (same as FFVII but even more so)
Metroid Prime (this game has the genre defining music for lava and winter stages IMO, and if I had to pick a top one, I’d probably pick this one)
Subnautica (this soundtrack was perfect for the game, plus the extra songs you could play in the jukebox were great, and I loved that you could listen to them on the go in the second game)
Sanctum/Satisfactory (they are connected in my mind because playing Satisfactory was where I was first exposed to Sanctum’s music)
Risk of Rain (curious if this one would be enjoyed by people who haven’t played the games… Anyone willing to do so, listen to The Rain Formerly Known as Purple and let me know if it still sounds awesome without it also meaning you’ve made it through 4 or so levels to hear it)
Also, honourable mentions for every Guitar Hero and Rock Band game for exposing me to a lot of great non-game music that I hadn’t otherwise been exposed to, as well as let me pretend to play along with ones I already loved and gain more tolerance/appreciation for ones I didn’t really like before. Green Grass and High Tides and Through the Fire and Flames especially.
And Rocksmith for doing that except with a real guitar and I didn’t get as advanced.
My brother really hasn’t listened to the music of our lord Mick Gordon’s DOOM & DOOM ETERNAL
Donkey Kong Country 1,2&3
Half my entire saved music collection is video game music.
Buddy must be trolling. That or he only plays sports games
C418
i have it on vinyl…
Me too
Surprised anything by Supergiant Games isn’t mentioned here, their soundtracks rock! Bastion and Hades really come to mind.
I love the song when you start each run in Hades in that first hallway
Fucking yes we do!
ROLLING AROUND AT THE SPEED OF SOUND!
GOT PLACES TO GO!
GOT TO FOLLOW MY RAINBOW!Lol, I have that front and center on one of my playlists. My partner did a doubletake when I put it on.
Ice cold take.
Portal 2 OST is a banger.
The Friendly Faith Plate…
A hot take then?
I can never get the slang right it seems
To be fair the term has been overused recently, often in the wrong context. Some people post “hot take” when it’s the least controversial, blatantly obvious take, so I can see how you might think it was the other way around.
Katamari Damacy
Naaaa na na na na na naa
I wanna roll you up into my life
I regularly play video game OSTs while I work/chill. To list some of my favorites:
- Starbound
- Sword & Sworcery: The Ballad of the Space Babies
- Mirror’s Edge
- Outer Wilds
- Undertale
- Minecraft
- The Last of Us Part I & II
Bro is missing out.
FTL: Faster Than Light
Sanctum
Bastion
Age of Empires II
Core Keeper
Sonic CD
Clair Obscur
Screamer
All fantastic soundtracks
Clair Obscure’s music is so good, almost every single one with lyrics is in my normal everyday playlist. Most VG music doesn’t get that honor and stays in their own specific playlist. Having lyrics is a big plus for me.
Transistor’s main character is a singer and the soundtrack is basically meant to be her songs. There are several with lyrics too that really are just songs and not backgrounds to the game.
Sanctum Soundtrack in Satisfactory boombox while mindlessly crouch jumping through my factory. I could do that all day.
I played Satisfactory before Sanctum, so I was already familiar with a bunch of the Sanctum music, which made my mind apply a lot of the good feelings from Satisfactory to Sanctum. Makes me wish there were more opportunities to learn to love a game’s soundtrack outside of the game before playing it for the first time.
Though I’m not sure it will work for just any game because Sanctum does have one of the best soundtracks.
Lol, I was forcing everyone I could to listen to the christmas songs they put out in the event. I could listen to a robot voice telling me I’m not working hard enough all day.
I refuse to buy Satisfactory until Sanctum 3 comes out as my personal protest to how long it’s been taking, maybe I’m just being too stubborn tho lol. But it’s been 13 years…
FTL’s music is just really nice and I should go reinstall it, thanks!
Nier and Clair Obscur have fantastic soundtracks
Nine Inch Nails did the soundtrack to Quake… And I still have that in my music collection
Or Mick Gordans Doom. I havent even played that version of doom but have listened to the OST multiple times.
