what specific platforms don’t work? I’ve used youtube, twitch, netflix, hulu, etc in the past and they all just worked right out of the box.

on my main laptop for whatever reason Windows 11, about twice a year or so, would insist on killing my wifi. Just out right disable it and not even uninstalling and reinstalling drivers would work. It would simply just kill it and pretend it never existed. the ONLY fix was to completely reinstall the OS. so almost like clockwork twice a year I’d have to reinstall the OS. It was also absolutely destroying the battery on my laptop. I would get MAYBE 30min out of it.

So after reading some threads I decided to give Linux a go. I went nuclear winter on it and didn’t even bother dual booting, just wiped the computer completely and started with Mint. Stayed on that for a couple weeks until I completely messed up the install by trying to modify cinnemon a bit too much so then I switched to CachyOS and fell in love with it.

Since then I distro hopped a few times and I’m currently using NixOS. As far as the battery issue? I get about 4 hours out of it now instead of 30min.

I’m not up to speed on GNOME, not a fan of it, but can’t you just try a different DM? like SDDM? would that work? seems silly that GNOME would lock you into their DM.

stopped using Amazon when they switched to Bluetooth lockers that can ONLY be opened via their shitty amazon app. Prior to that? was easy and the lockers were great. either enter the code you get emailed or scan the barcode and boom locker opens. NOW you need to have the amazon app which tries to connect to the locker via bluetooth. It’s hit or miss. I don’t want to use your amazon app, I just want my stuff. The thing doesn’t even work most of the time. I remember once I was waiting in line to pick up my package and of the 5 people standing in line with me at the locker 3 of them couldn’t get the locker to open. Contact customer service? it’s a known issue…

yup discovered this on my server yesterday. needed something on there so just did sudo apt install blahblahblah and then come to find the little ubuntu fucker installed a snap of it.

yeah but from a University IT Admin standpoint NixOS would just be so much easier to maintain and set up. you literally would just need one config file to slap on all the machines. Install the OS, clone the config, rebuild, walk away and go to the next computer. Program causing issues and needs to be removed? cool edit the config, push it to the repo, clone it to all the machines, rebuild.

would be brutally easy though.

All they had to do was adapt Halo: Reach. that’s it. You want someone the audience can relate to? easy, Noble Six. Coulda literally made that character be anyone because that’s who they are when we play, anyone. you can make it a season or two and gradually one after one the Noble Team kicks the bucket until the end where you can have your nice little reveal of the Master Chief.

For people who played it’ll be neat for them because they know what’s coming and have to relive that emotional roller coaster. For people who didn’t? it’ll be shocking and again an emotional roller coaster. You even have the history with Halsey and all that thrown in.

I mean the mainline Halo story goes off the rails eventually anyways but they literally had an easy layup with just adapting Halo: Reach. Hell coulda just done an ODST show.

Essentially Bsky users finally discovered that their “safe space” social media site is in fact run by people that actually really don’t like them.

the meat and potatoes is their “ceo” mocked the user base when people called her out for banning people that spoke ill of Charlie Kirk while not banning the most blocked user on the site, Jessie Signal, a transphobic journalist.

She then “encouraged” users to not post as a form of protest. Also somehow Lowtax’s ex wife got involved. It’s weird a weird mess and it’s not a good look for either side. A. the bluesky userbase looks foolish for believing this social media site was different and a “safe space” when it wasn’t. and B. Bluesky themselves look foolish for mocking said user base.

Just a heads up for people though the method you describe where you set a hotkey to open a video externally to mpv currently isn’t working as google has essentially borked youtube-dl. Just tried it right now via qutebrowser and youtube-dl can’t read the urls anymore.
