Iirc that picture was “faked” in the sense that the perspective makes it seem more dangerous than it is. There’s actually a platform under him.
Yeah but, this guy died.
…years later. But he did die.
Posing for trick photography has a 100% fatality rate…eventually.
That’s the same rate of death that getting your family picture taken at Sears has.
Those bastards
That’s it! I’m never having my picture taken at, behind or in front of a Sears! It’s just too risky!
I believe
Charlie Chaplindid similar stunts back in the dayThe end results are badass though. Totally looks like they are dangling in peril
Edit: Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton. Not Charlie Chaplin
I don’t think Chaplin was known for that kind of stunts, but Buster Keaton was. Like the classic clip where the front of a house collapses on him and he’s standing right where the window falls.
Buster Keaton did a lot of this kind of thing with perspective and stuff, but he was also a badass who did some incredible stunts.
I dunno if he was known for it or not, but Chaplin did this sort of thing too. There’s a roller skating clip of him “almost falling” a couple floors in this compilation (2nd clip)
That was a matte painting, there was no actual stunt there, just camera tricks.
That same video has a clip of Buster Keaton riding a motorcycle over a collapsing bridge. The part with the trucks was camera tricks. The part with the bridge falling was a real stunt.
This’d be more of a Harold Lloyd thing
That’s it! Thank you
Maybe, but this guy (Charles N. Fidgerald) was a true daredevil and this photo is not the craziest thing he did.
Supports the claim people were more sensible back then. Today we have moron YouTubers who actually climb such heights without any safety.
Well where else are they going to post it? LiveLeak shut down.
Fun fact, you are more likely to die taking a selfie than to be killed by a shark. From 2018-2021 more than 300 people died while taking a selfie, in that same time period about 200 people were killed by sharks.
Well, I don’t go to the beach and we don’t even have dangerous sharks here. So yeah, no shit.
-
Sharks aren’t that dangerous because people don’t encounter them that much
-
People make selfies from dangerous positions. Going to a cliff to take a selfie is more on the side of “going to a cliff” than on the side of “taking a selfie”. Even more people die wearing cloths.

I’ve had this argument with my wife, who wants to swim with Orcas, so many times.
Me: Orcas are the sadistic murder cats of the ocean. Do not swim with them. They may decide to kill you for the fun of it.
Her: There has never been a reported fatal orca attack! You worry too much!
Me: How many people do you think are trying to swim with wild orcas every year? Sample size is to small. It’s like saying it’s safe to slap a grizzly bear with a pool noodle and then throw a Meringue pie in it’s face, because AFAIK, no one has ever died doing so.
Lmao, Now we need her response to that, please.
We have a trip to Alaska to see the salmon run coming up. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has already booked a swim with the orcas without telling me.
Source?
I was quoting this article, couldn’t get to their source — could be pay-walled.
Thanks. It’s well written and with a couple of funny stories but their own source is neither directly linked or named.
People have done dumb shit for fame and glory ever since ancient times. Remember Herostratus?
He did something incredibly stupid to get famous.
And it worked.
I have no idea who that is.
Did you ever see the episode of Futurama where Bender had that big ass “Remember Me!” tomb built? He’s like that except instead of tricking a planet and becoming a pharaoh to have slaves build things he burned down a temple of Artemis.
It seems to have kind of worked.
I remember reading as punishment for the crime and rationale, he was executed and his name forbidden to be mentioned. All this time I thought he was anonymous.
Yet we’re here talking about him a couple of thousand years later. So it worked.
Or maybe that’s the name of someone that he hated and they planted it in the collective consciousness to make the punishment complete.
That would be fucking hilarious
Those ancient Greeks were tricksy, I tells you 😁
