The moral of the original book is that the tricks and tools are not a replacement for self control. It’s humbling that a literal children’s book can (re)teach us profound things. And to me, it’s comforting to know that a child’s fresh mind is infinitely better at things so many of us struggle with (e.g., a phoneless child isn’t addicted to screens, a newborn can become a vegan as easily as an omnivore)

I think this capacity for “productive discomfort” has an older name that feels almost out of date. It’s patience
Fuck. Most of the problems in my life seem to be addressed by the most simple and difficult things I’ve heard a thousand times, yet fail to adequately incorporate into my life (“patience is a virtue”, “drink water & eat vegetables”, “stay active” etc.)

Apex enshitification

In my neck of the woods “thank god for this people crusher, I love it when my government crushes people and I will continue to vote for whichever candidate promises to crush the most people” is a depressingly common sentiment 😞
Because racism and sexism connote a broad power dynamic of oppression, and since white men have most of the political and social power, critiques of them are not sexist or racist. I’d say OP is just a sexually & racially prejudicial strawman, i.e. a lemmy shitpost ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )
If I was on windows I’m sure the unofficial patch would’ve done it all, but in linux I had to use a couple of virtualisation tools I’d never heard of (whereas every game I’ve tried from this decade runs out of the box with Proton). The most hair-pulling step was that I had to run the game via a symlink because if the full path to the executable was too long it’d crash to desktop before I even got to hear the menu music. God bless the protondb commenter that figured that out.
I recently had a hankering to play Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Because the game is so old and buggy, and because I’m running Linux, it took a lot of patching and tweaks to get running. Probably took around 4 hours, because you can’t tell which random fix someone posted a decade ago will work until you try it. It was a very authentic experience of gaming in the early 2000s, and the struggle made playing the game all the more fun.

Do you have a source on this? It’d be great ammo for convincing my associates to ditch the platform

The way she fits & fills that basket is so cozy and satisfying, I love that for her :)

Very wise, consider me convinced

I had no idea that bridges like this existed; looking at the matrix bridge docs this looks perfect! And I’ve heard good things about matrix in general. Good point that using a combination of apps is more realistic than trying to find one that does everything.

How might I find people nearby that would like to join, and then coordinate details? Knocking on doors has gone poorly.

Hard disagree, it wouldn’t be compulsory and whatsapp is dogshit feature wise. Making friends as an adult is hard; I’d kill for a way to find people that live walking distance from me that want to play D&D.

I agree, that’s why I was hoping for something that would work well in-browser: no additional download required. It’s me: the lonely bored person that wants something to do. I’ve tried going door to door, but people around here haaaate that.

Good points. For the hardware, there are additional things I’d like to self host (personal website, media server, game servers, etc.) so I was imagining hardware I could grow into. I have a trial setup (git, lemmy, and apostrophe CMS managed by portainer + nginx + Heimdall) on my gaming pc that seems to work well and which I’d like to make a permanent version of. Definitely not married to having a blade, but I definitely want to go on premises. If there’s downtime, it’ll be because of an internet/power outage affecting the neighborhood, so no one’ll be trying to access it anyway. Adoption will be hard either way (the people I live around are mired in the metaverse 😭) and I’m open to suggestions on that as well.
“If not sun, why sun colored?” I imagine a sun lamp would be like a sleep ray for cats!
Gah, she’s so little oh my god! Maybe I’m projecting a bit from my own situation, e.g. Here’s Fiona demonstrating couch scratching technique next to the couch she scratched (unrelated scratching post in the corner).
