I haven’t seen Linux users fights over distros… Ever. We just have lots of choices, and most of them are awesome.
Long time linux user and tinkerer. Currently working as a devops engineer. Very positive to the idea of decentralized internet platforms. :)

It’s a sign of the times that this is upvoted so much. When I was growing up, this was called normal behavior and was boring and nobody talked about it.
Yes. Many people are not trans.
I need a list of which ones don’t allow assholes to enter. :)
I’m not sure about that. What if advertising were used to cover server costs, just like donations right now? Then the community may be fine with it.
But I think it’s very dangerous to go down that route. Because it’s going to become about higher profits, not just covering costs, in the long run.
What you can do is install wireguard server at home and then set your phone to use that wireguard connection always. That’s what I do and then my pihole at home filters all my mobile traffic as well.
You can rent an instance for like 10 dollars per month and grow from there. Then expand if you get users and things get slow. Lemmy runs ok on 4 GB of memory but it’s better with 8 GB. Postgres use the most.
It’s what we all loved about the internet I think, before the web become… “that” (looking at the pile of shit the web has become).
But actually it’s not the web, not really. It’s the big tech platforms that most people seem to think is the internet now. It’s sad to watch how people log on to “Facebook” and not the general web anymore. And then Google in front of everything, like a big cancer growth.
Lemmy is not the new internet either I believe. But it’s here to show people that something else can exist. As soon as we let advertising in here though, it’s over.
Thank you very much :) I added some glue to this post to give it a bit more attention since I’m super happy for the help and appreciate it a lot.
I haven’t written that much about myself either before. But I can say that I also grew up with computers in the 80s and 90s. And I also had my own BBS back then, so thanks for the nostalgia trip! Sometimes I miss it a lot. The community feeling was incredible since so few people were doing things like that. The ones that did were similar to a lot of Lemmy users and curious about new technology and ways of doings things.
And just like @[email protected] here, I have zero interest in any power tripping. I like to keep a low profile most of the time and when something happens, I try to do the best I can to fix it. This instance is here because I want people to have an alternative to big tech platforms that are abusing and disrespecting their users. And I plan to stay in the background as much as possible, because this instance is not about me or buelldozer - it’s about you guys and building a community around Lemmy. :)
Cats are easily the best looking being on the planet.
I’m paying for it right now but it’s not that much money, and I have a good day job in IT with a good salary.
If the server grows really big for some reason, we can talk about donations but right now, it’s totally fine. :)
Thank you though, really appreciate it! I feel motivated by happy users and it’s just fun to provide a platform that people enjoy using.
Of course. Not all women will do this. Your wife doesn’t do it, that’s great. But we all have different experiences in life. Everyone gets treated differently. So all these discussions are is about our subjective experiences.
One thing women does that men don’t… Is that they remember every single time you did something dumb, and they will use that as ammunition in every fight.
I agree and this internet we have now has turned into crap, and it’s the corporations who is responsible for it, because they want their profits.
Every big tech service is always nice at first and then the horrific ads and user tracking starts. People use an ad company to search the internet now and that’s completely normal appearently. :)
Everything from these big corps have no soul. Because we know it’s just about exploiting users for money.
I want the old internet back so bad. Hopefully federation can fuel many new actually fun services that are not built to make money but to actually entertain and amuse people, or simply be useful.
I personally feel pleasure from doing good things in the world. But it seems to be a group of people who doesn’t feel it’s worth doing something for others unless there is money to be made from it.
Haha yeah. Well I’m an arch user for at least a decade, and i saw manjaro come… It was very popular in the beginning. Then they started making strange decisions, but I think many people are still happy with it. Otherwise I think endevourOS is doing good. :)
