  • Because there is no inherent benefit to easing the clutch “in”. At least that’s the reason they gave me when I was learning how to drive, and my mechanic doesn’t seem to disagree. Basically, you want to disengage the transmission from the engine as soon as possible (especially when you’re doing that to benefit from the engine brake), change your gear, then gently ease the clutch “out”

  • The microscopist Walter McCrone found, based on his examination of samples taken in 1978 from the surface of the shroud using adhesive tape, that the image on the shroud had been painted with a dilute solution of red ochre pigment in a gelatin medium.

the shroud’s linen material was produced between the years 1260 and 1390 (to a 95% confidence level)

    Seems legit

  • I guess it could be construed as racist when it’s literally “master/slave”. But I have never seen it as a normalization of slavery because there usually is no value attached to the terms, it’s just describing the relation between them. And I don’t think acknowledging that a slave generally doesn’t have much say in doing what their master tells them is racist in itself or endorsing/normalizing slavery.

But also, I am white, and there are other terms we can use that can describe this kind of relation just fine, so, whatever. I just get mildly annoyed when some stuff that was working perfectly fine gets deprecated just to change these terms and I have to adapt to it.

  • Yeah I love how eagle owls look. Magnificent little fellas

I learned a lot of things about raptors behavior, how they are heavily affected by their past experiences with humans, all of them have their own personalities, like some of them actually respond to flattery or praises, etc. I was a little surprised to learn that most birds of prey won’t fly if they don’t need to hunt for their survival because I never really thought about it but it makes a lot of sense, especially for predatory birds.
