I know it’s slow around here, but zero-effort AI slop can only make this community worse.

We hear you, and are currently considering what to do - whether to introduce amended rules, what they would be and when. Current content doesn’t break any of the rules we’ve put in place, and as we’ve only had two AI related posts in the history of this community we’re not moving to immediate bans on this content. There’s an understandable dislike for AI imagery, so in the meantime we encourage members to use post votes and create your own content contributions.

Maybe rule 3 could be expanded to forbid low effort posts, or something in those lines?

This may not be too dissimilar to an approach we end up taking. We’ve seen the response to this post so looking further into how others are tackling this issue.

That’s understandable, and obviously an impromptu petition post isn’t a binding referendum. I just figured I’d (I think correctly) gleaned that most users don’t want to see this, and it seems like it was even more overwhelming than I’d predicted. I of course agree it’s unlikely to become some sort of rampant problem in a relatively niche community; still, I think any occurrence of it at all is unhealthy for any community not explicitly dedicated to it.

As noted, even with the downvotes, Choerry’s softcore pornographic (if you don’t believe that’s what it’s supposed to be, their post history and the trynectar watermark make it extremely evident) AI-generated image of Aerith (offering absolutely nothing of any substance and made in mere minutes, if even that) would still be at the top of this community sorted by ‘Hot’ were it not for this post. This is simply because this community is not active enough for downvotes to meaningfully affect where a post gets placed in ‘Hot’. It’s of course your community, and that’s your prerogative.

Absolutely, and the last thing we want is for the community to become a dumping ground of one particular type of content. It’s a general Final Fantasy community and we will always try to uphold that.

Though we’ve looked at their post history and it has caused some raised eyebrows here, we’re not ones to use that as evidence for bans and only look at conduct within this community.

We almost did remove the first post based on that pornographic assumption but realised it would fit a loose definition of softcore at best based on the image itself. So decided against that. Then the consideration became how to move forward with AI content, as that was one image and we hadn’t received another until now, we decided against a kneejerk reaction in removing or even banning it.

As for downvotes, this is why I also mentioned content contributions. We do have that challenge as @[email protected] is by far the biggest contributor to the community and almost keeps it running on their contributions alone. However, that recent AI image still received more upvotes (though it has negative ratio) than quite a number of Haru’s contributions, so it makes it difficult to use votes alone as indicators based on 2 posts.

As I said, we’re keeping an eye on this and keeping all options on the table right now.

That makes sense! The thorough response is hugely appreciated. :) Even though we still disagree, I see how reasonable minds could differ here.

It would be a shame to blanket ban posts with generative content because of two low quality posts. A mod took over a community and just banned AI posts for no reason. That made me pretty sad.

        No it wouldn’t.

A mod took over a community and just banned AI posts for no reason.

AI slop is garbage. That’s a good enough reason.

AI posts had been explicitly allowed in the past, and there had been several well-liked posts in the community. Not a single person broke the old rules, which were very sensible, so a blanket ban without consulting the community was not good moderation IMO.

That’s not what we’re doing here, no rules have been changed right now because of 2 posts. We are however considering what needs to change, and what the next steps are without being too reactionary in response to this thread.

I’m assuming you believe we should allow AI posts, so I would be interested to know why?

There are some cool FF things going on that aren’t low effort or otherwise rule breaking, and I’d like to be able to report on them here.

What are they and what’s stopping you from reporting on them here? Being vague doesn’t help us with these decisions and doesn’t help us understand what people do and don’t want to see, or share.

While I haven’t found anything FF related that’s high enough quality that I want to post here yet, a blanket ban would keep me from being able to do so in the future.

Downvotes are (supposed to be) indicative of an expression by users that something doesn’t belong in a community, though. Moreover, the downvotes make no real difference in keeping the AI slop off the top of this community because it’s relatively inactive. Finally, it shouldn’t be on the users to actively show overwhelming disapproval every time this category of post comes up; when it’s clear most users don’t want it, it should simply be banned, especially when it takes effectively zero effort to create and is therefore likely to be frequent.

We’ve updated and clarified each of our rules that we have laid out. This covers a number of points made within this thread, as well as issues and concerns we’ve faced before. There are also some other pre-emptive rules to prevent spam and low-effort posts.

The new full set of rules can be found here: https://lemmy.world/post/21386826 or can be found at any time in the sidebar.

As such, we’re also implementing a ban on most AI covered in Rule 3. iii.

iii. Fan created content is allowed as long as it falls inline with all other rules, with the exception of AI-generated content, which is not allowed outside of mods (e.g. Moguri Mod).

We won’t be retroactively be removing AI posts, or banning those users. However it will be enforced from today (29th October).

This thread will not be closed, and anyone wishing to continue discussing it are more than welcome.
