I mentioned in the weekly thread i was going to make sushi for the extended family this week. We made 18 rolls and it was a huge hit! I forgot to take pictures the day of so these were some of the leftovers on day 2, but still delicious!

The rolls are our favorite from a local restaurant and a few years ago we saw the they had shared the recipe here in case anyone is interested in trying it.

These are some vegan rolls I made last year. Totally worth the effort when you miss sushi!

If you can find a place that makes Inari/sweet tofu/tofu skin/whatever else people call it, it makes for some great vegan sushi.

I’ve thought about making it, I live just a bit too rural to get it shipped to me. But I’ll put it back in the list to try, thanks for the reminder!

These look delicious! And much better presentation 😅 but yeah we do have a nearby restaurant with a vegan sushi menu but is too expensive for us to go for anything except special occasions so making it at home ends up being totally worth it. Plus we love to pack ours much fuller than any restaurant lol. Less money, more food. Win win!

It can be a ton of work. Seasoning the rice properly, creating different fillings and also a variety of sauces, and then rolling and slicing the rolls neatly (the hardest part - if you don’t have a sharp knife, like don’t even try). If you’re like me, you end up with a huge mess. It does get a little easier every time, but it is much harder than it looks at first. You’ll easily spend half a day in the kitchen, unless you somehow have everything already on hand.

I cheat and have a mold, which makes it so much easier. You put the rice and filling in, and you press it into a cylinder and then just roll that in nori. It made sushi become a much more frequent dish at home.

We made it into a fun date night idea the first time a few years ago. We had each picked out a few different rolls to try and then went out to the asian market for the sushi rice, nori, and a few of the produce we didn’t have from our garden.

Those look fabulous. I might have to try making some sushi again, the last time I attempted it was over 15 years ago. I’ll have to make some “naked” rolls, my partner has to limit iodine intake.
