Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•BYD tripling shipment volumes to Australia to 30,000 cars amid fuel price surge
3·4 days agoI do wish there was a company selling “dumb” EVs. No cellular, no OTA updates, no cameras and so on. Just battery, motor, motor controller and auxiliaries. Like a cheap car from 2005. A DIY conversion is the only way to achieve this as far as I know.
Get ya a job in real estate quick as.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•AI Company Clones Musician’s Voice, Then Copyright-Strikes Her Own Songs
9·8 days agoWell supposedly the AI company is the one who has made the copyright strike against the artist - so the copy or style thing doesnt entirely matter - they’ve stopped her income and are trying to take it for themselves. (I’m also a tad suspicious of the story btw)

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•In butt disease culture, it must be high praise to defile a freshly cleaned toilet.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•Australia’s first end-to-end all-electric freight delivery
2·16 days agoActually a pretty decent article. Straight to the point. Found it really interesting the e-truck completed the journey 25mins faster than diesel due to steep hills that slow diesel trucks to a crawl.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•A researcher asked 10 people to go car-free for 20 days. None wanted to continueEnglish
26·23 days ago“However, researchers found given participants were likely to slightly reduce their reliance on cars, it showed experiencing car-free living, even briefly, could help people break away from automobility.”
I think this is an important secondary take away here. Reducing car use is still much better than continuing at current rate. (Similar to eating less meat vs going vegan cold turkey).
Owning a car does come with large sunk-costs tho - so you won’t feel the full financial benefit from just reducing car use (still have to pay rego, insurance, maintenance etc.)

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•Soaring fuel prices see spike in EV interest in Australia
2·24 days agoIs it weird that i kinda feel sad/disappointed at this uptake, despite being a big fan of EVs? A fucked up war causes oil prices to go up and now everyone’s clamouring to consume? Cool

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you miss drinking from the water fountain?
7·2 months agoI did when I travelled to Finland in summer and learnt they dont have public drink fountains in parks. I got so fuggin dehydrated that day 😆

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there anything like church without the church?
16·3 months agoSports clubs and hobby clubs for sure. In Australia we have clubs called Men’s* Sheds that are for things like woodworking, but also a place to talk about mental health - things like loneliness. (*I don’t think they’re all so exclusively Men’s sheds these days).
I play disc golf and that sometime feels like a church haha. Trying tk convince people it’s an awesome sport amd get them to try it feels like trying to convert someone 😂
I dunno, but driving thru the insanely rich neighbourhoods definitely depresses me out.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL there's a whole genre of movies called Mockbusters, movies that bootleg the expensive originals.English
25·3 months agoBe Kind Rewind is a quirky movie where they end up making these Mockbusters. Don’t recommend if you don’t like Jack Black. Do recommend if you like Mos Def.

Technology@lemmy.world•Bandcamp bans purely AI-generated music from its platformEnglish
2·3 months agoNot answering your question exactly, but finding community (non-commercial) radio shows in your local area that you like is a good way to find new music. Find a few shows/presenters that play music/genres you like and they should play local artists that you might not have heard. They’ll also mention upcoming gigs etc.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Self-hosting in 2026 isn't about privacy anymore - it's about building resistance infrastructureEnglish
8·3 months agoI’m right there with ya. I’m thinking it might be a case of picking easy pieces (projects) of the puzzle to start with and then building from there. Like I’m considering setting a pi-hole soon - seems like an easier networking project. But yeah, I’m not really sure what’s the best order of eaiest to hardest projects in terms of self hosting etc.
Cornball was the Pangram in the NYT spelling bee the other day. This was my first thought.

Siiick. Fingers crossed that takes off
