  • Even this method is overreach: who control the database?

Journalist have a scoop on a US violation of civil rights? Well not if it is important to the CIA who slipped the PDF that was their evidence into the hash pool and had his phone silently rat him out as the one reporting.

This hands ungodly power to those running that database. It’s blind, and it “only flags the bad things”. Which we all agree CSAM is bad, but I can easily ruin someone inconvenient to me if I was in that position by just ensuring some of his personal and unique photo get into the hash. It’s a one way process, so everyone would just believe definitively that this radical MLK guy is a horrible pedo because we got some images off his phone in a diner.

  • I honestly could give a shit. You think games don’t report telematics internally back to devs? Who share them with publishers anyways?

Valve has so much telematicd data on you it’s insane. Same with other companies. Sony just isn’t good at burying the lead.

At the end of the day it’s the same as a GOG Account, an Epic Login, or a Ubisoft Account. They all exist and we lost this fight when we allowed giant super publishers to merge and control distribution, and when no alternative to steam has ever got off the ground.

Say what you will about Epic, but it is by f as R the closest anything is to breaking Valve’s iron grip, and it’s still a distant second place also ran.

So yea, Sony requires a login. I wish they didn’t, but literally everything does besides GOG. They all use Denuvo and DRM and lock the exe to the client. Sony doing it to run their leaderboards at least makes some sense.

  • The cats out of the bag on this. It’s enforceable for now to try and ban it, maybe. Because the models are mostly online and intensive.

In 2028 though, when you can train your own model and generate your own local images without burning a server farm? This has to happen for ML to keep growing and catch on.

welp. Then there is infinite fake child porn. Because you cannot police every device and model.

Because of how tech companies have handled this technology, this is not an if scenario. This is guaranteed now.

  • It is so damning that the entire industry has reacted that way. It’s not that they closed a studio, that cod have been ignored. It’s how brazenly they closed successful studios for being successful while talking out the other side of their mouth to the press.

It feels gross in a much more palpable way. And with everything else going on in tech it feels so wrong coming from one of the biggest companies in earth.

I’m 100% over Xbox. I hope their next console is the worst release since ET on Atari.

  • Google owns the platform. You’re not really comparing like to like.

It’s like saying since Google can modify some files in Windows that Microsoft doesn’t control the platform.

Sony upstreams many of its changes, but you’re right that Samsung does not. This is both because of differentiation, but also because often the changes are in defiance of the “official” Google spec in android and merging is refused.

One plus for example offers further customization on gesture input that is missing in Android 13, allowing corner bottom swipes, hiding the little nav line, etc. But this cannot merge.

Google has decided a “solution”, to hell with if your features are better. I would love to see these features in android mainline. But Google won’t allow it. Sony made a theme system years ago, but Android wouldn’t fully merge it, and took another 5 or so years to make something.
