Yeah I’ve met people like that. I believe they’re normally called “psychopaths” for short. They tend to be concentrated in particular places and occupations and of course they will all tell you that it’s perfectly normal and that everyone else is also like that and just hiding it.

I’d appreciate it if everyone could just stop burning fossil fuels, please. Thank you for your cooperation.

I think the best strategy is to contribute lots of money and work to promoting and developing free software, improving it and using it everywhere so that it comes to be ubiquitous, used by everyone. That will make it even more of a target for malware authors and therefore lead to its sure demise. We should get started right away.
I remember Windows — it was ok for its time I guess, but I didn’t like it as much as AmigaOS.
Why does everyone see AI as a race? Can’t we just have a good old-fashioned space race instead? It’d be way less expensive.

9·2 days agoThe trick will be in getting a charge to last long enough that it doesn’t need more frequent pit stops.
That would indeed be quite a trick. The batteries would need to get more energy-dense by more than an order of magnitude compared to the best that are available today. EVs are great for commuting and transportation where vehicle weight isn’t as important and you’re not constantly trying to go as fast as possible, but they’re a very long way from being competitive in that type of racing.

1·2 days agoThat’ll depend on how it happens I guess. They could completely rewrite the rules of NASCAR to nerf the petrol-based competition, invent a totally new way of storing electrical energy, or completely rewrite the rules of physics.

21·2 days agoWeird headline. Whatever you think of their arguments, the interesting part is not that they were so bold as to describe the latest plan for mass surveillance as “mass surveillance.”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what will happen to all the datacenters when the bubble bursts?
4·4 days agoI asked a chatbot that question a few months ago when I was trying them out. It came up with lots of bullshit ideas that make no sense to me, and one genuine use for some of that surplus data centre capacity: Scientific computing. Physics, astronomy, climate simulations, that sort of thing.
Aside from that maybe when all the big AI companies go bust their assets will be bought up by new operators who will continue to flood the market with cheap generative AI, without the burden of having to pretend that it’s possible to pay off all the debt incurred in building it. There are only so many high-energy physics simulations it’s worth doing and having that many GPUs is not really useful for much else that anyone’s discovered so far.
According to the Internet though it is said that the useful lifespan of a big Nvidia data centre GPU is something like 5-10 years, so it won’t be a problem for long.
Nah, the peak economic system is potlatch.
Which country is that? Just wondering. Explaining that the people and the government are not the same thing seems a little obvious and beside the point.
Right, the country is conventionally known as “China” and that is probably what it should be called in general discussion. I know some people like to endlessly talk about nothing else even when there is nothing new to say, but I don’t really get it. Perhaps that’s because I mostly see only things I’ve subscribed to, so my view of lemmy doesn’t include much of that kind of talk. That makes your post stand out and look like it’s indicative of some kind of weird senseless obsession with the topic.
My feeling is that anyone saying “CCP” and expecting everyone to know what they mean and have opinions about it is probably trolling.

25·5 days agoOne cannot really build an alliance with an ideology. Alliances are between people. I would be open to allying with people variously influenced by or holding to any ideology that does not itself ally with fascism.

Huh, weird. The only thing I can think of is to check /etc/security/limits.d to see if there’s another conf file in there setting it to 4096.
Are you sure you really need 1048576 open files? It seems like a lot. But you’ll probably want to set “soft” as well as “hard” limits. Then you need to log in again for the change to take effect.

Technology@beehaw.org•Cloudflare CEO says bot internet traffic has overtaken humans
22·7 days agoI wonder how Cloudflare estimates the increased rate of false positives they’re getting after they made their bot detector even more oversensitive in recent weeks. It no longer likes my default javascript-enabled browser profile and I don’t always bother to load another one when I get cloudflared, so >50% of visits from me are “bots”.

Europe@feddit.org•French prosecutors open 'war crime' and 'torture' probe over Israel's treatment of Gaza flotilla activists
8·7 days agoSad times for Israel. Multiple generations of nonstop escalating war crimes and torture, and all of a sudden people start accusing you of war crimes and torture.

If the idea is to connect with family and friends, there are parts of the Fediverse where you can post stuff that’s only visible to followers. Probably not possible on lemmy or piefed though, I think.
