2·12 days agoSounds like Soylent or people kibble tbh, like kudos for finding the right cheap meal for you but god it seems so sad to have to eat that. I’m not picky but I’d go crazy never eating fresh foods

Late Stage Capitalism@lemmy.world•Liberalism every election season
4·12 days agoIt’s hard for me to motivate myself to care when a lot of the times it feels like the “doing nothing” that’s happening is a coordinated and controlled opposition to an evil agenda that is also working toward the same goal, but more quietly. I get that we have a token few democratic socialists, but it isn’t enough to upset the establishment that takes money/bribes from the same donors, has similar corrupt interests, and allows what’s happening to happen with only some pearl clutching and finger wagging to show their disapproval.
At the rate that republicans are dismantling what precious little safeties there are for civilians, it’s hard to imagine some comeback renaissance where anything close to the damage caused becomes damage fixed before our country is completely destitute, and corpos poison every well they can get their greasy little fingers in to the detriment of everyone else here. It saddens me.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•It's funny how once a country has Universal Healthcare they never give it up.
10·12 days agoThey should try gerrymandering, election rigging, and voter disenfranchisement after fucking their constituency to combat that reelection problem, works a charm in the US

Late Stage Capitalism@lemmy.world•Liberalism every election season
6·12 days agoTo be honest with you, every time the dems have had power they have squandered the opportunity to prevent further corruption in this country, or to protect our future on a long enough timeline to negate the aftereffects of the next election cycle. That inaction and useless hand wringing is such a flaccid and disgustingly inept response to the very real dangers and very pressing concerns of the near future. If they can’t be trusted to combat republicans, then what’s the fucking point?

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple hit with a $5.7 billion verdict for alleged patent infringementEnglish
1·13 days agoI mean it’s exactly what you’ve said. They hem and haw and refuse to report news that could warrant a future retraction—which, by the way, is a stupid take, as news is temporal and current and what they’re reporting currently is in the interest of some unknown future verdict rather than the one before us now. So, given that they choose to report whatever is most favorable for future corporate interest despite damning current events, I have to conclude that it’s because journalists are prevented from doing their actual jobs by media conglomerates who will always side with capital. How does that twist your words exactly?

1·14 days agoSo just more gutless journalism focused on appeasing corporate interest rather than reporting the truth? Shocking
I mean they’re counting on parents to capitulate to the demands of their children for this not to be a financial mistake on their end.

She wrote a book I read in high school called Black Water, about the true story of Senator Ted Kennedy who drove into a river while ludicrously intoxicated and with a young girl of no consequence as his passenger in the car. He gets himself out of car and lives, but she drowns within it. He received no punishment and this was, for the most part, covered up. Succession on HBO also had an episode that paid homage to this dark bit of American history (for a fun bit of trivia).
Anyway, she’s a great writer and captures these little vignettes on human nature in really intriguing ways. I recommend you read her work. In fact, this makes me feel like perhaps I should give that book a reread as well.
I think if we use that big ball of slightly wrinkled goop between our left ear and right ear, we might infer that she is simply supplying a list of hobbies and interests which people generally all have at least a few of. We might then use something called imagination to further supplement this list with unreferenced items in the original tweet because a thorough recounting might lose in spirit a bit of its charm with that style of execution

1·23 days agoHave you considered that DINK and non traditional families also have multiple motivations and are multi-faceted individuals? I would never condemn anyone for having children but I am sad for children being given a bad life they didn’t choose by parents who knew better. I’m more of the mind that should I want children, I will probably end up adopting or fostering one day, but I am not compelled to breed or to spread some bloodline legacy when there are more than enough unloved and suffering children in the world — but even then I have qualms with the ethical implications of a society that takes children from poor families it refuses to provide for and pays others to raise (however poorly) those same kids whose mothers were deemed undeserving of that same social welfare.
You call me a doomer and anti-natalist, but you agree with how shitty everything is so what’s the issue? That I’m realistic about it and not relentlessly optimistic that life will find a way so I should just cheer up about it? Is it anti-natalist to believe we have a resources and population issue and that declining birth rates, however bad for an economy, can only be a longer term boon for the sum total of our species’ destructive capability? I don’t hate children, but I don’t feel qualified to make a better world for them and that grieves me. People are supposed to want their children to prosper, to live a better life, and if I can’t imagine that possibility, my personal ethos is that I shouldn’t create a living being that gets to watch what’s coming play out.
I am depressed. It’s depressing. Everyone is depressed. Therapy only does so much, but my problems are only internal insofar as I choose to look at the world without blinding myself to very real problems. Sure, I could chipper up if I choose to be ignorant and delusional about everything, but that’s not who I am and never has been. Whatever soft-genocide or economically-driven eugenics you think I support because I am fearful for the poor and what their children will suffer, since they will always suffer the most, I can tell you that I would rather these marginalized groups had access to thorough sex education and safe birth control options because historically it has only helped those communities, both economically and socially. If you disagree with that despite factual evidence in cases like quantifiable improvements in marginalized communities a generation after Roe v Wade was decided, then you ignore reality to create an enemy that doesn’t exist, while trivializing real issues.

6·23 days agoYeah the Japanese weren’t exactly doing great things at the time but their failure to offer a complete and immediate surrender following the collapse of the Nazi regime did not and could never justify the two most horrific, apocalyptic single attacks ever committed against a civilian population. The US leaders did it because they could, and because they wanted to show off their new toy.

1·24 days agoI can’t help it. I’m glad to be infertile. Children born right now would inevitably face the extreme results of a climate crisis, depleting fresh water stores, the global sociopolitical breakdown currently happening in favor of far right fascists funded by billionaires, and everything that comes with that.
I feel we are past the point of no return and am confident that I will probably die before the absolute worst of it, but my generation’s children would not. I have never been more afraid for children in my life, and there are many in my own little village. I just do not and cannot foresee a future where this gets better, with as powerless as we are against surveillance and military technology. As nihilistic as it sounds, we are speedrunning extinction and the guard rails are gone. I do not want to see children suffer for it, and especially not my own.
I guess I mean inconsiderate as in OP did not consider the optics or have the situational awareness to parse the difference between the expectation she(?) set through her actions and the reality that came after?
But I agree with you, I don’t really think this will be a repeat situation. I’m more inclined to believe that if there was a potential romance going there this might’ve killed it.

Not to mention the fucked up lack of sidewalks and pedestrian infrastructure just about everywhere that isn’t urban (and even in places where it is)
