News@lemmy.world•America's largest grid wants to cut power to new data centers first during shortages — 50MW-plus data centers must bring their own electricity generation to avoid shutoffs
2·4 days agoBackup generators are the only reasonable alternative at this scale if the grid goes down. Battery banks last minutes, and are only good to allow for diesel to kick in.
Well, at least someone put a bit of elbow grease into that tomfoolery.

5·9 days agoPeople travel, which can make access to good screens difficult (think flights, busses).
Such glasses are not cheap, but provide virtually unlimited screen space wherever you are.

4·11 days agoI quite enjoy ‘Supermalt’, a malt drink with NO alcohol. It has a large warning for 18+ on the shelves at Tesco, yet I’m not carded on checkout.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Mars Bar from the 1990s found during house clearance - shrinkflation in actionEnglish
7·12 days agoThat’s almost the worst part. Not only is the food ultra-processed now, but it’s all engineered to extract every fraction of a penny in margins.
If this goes on, I might as well just inject palm oil straight to my veins.

Technology@lemmy.world•YouTube’s AI slop detector incorrectly targets Kurzgesagt as other creators fear same fate - DexertoEnglish
1·14 days agoIntentional stunt? That’s highly unlikely.
It is difficult to detect AI slop, probably exponentially so when it’s a video compared to image or text. I don’t know why you said it like there’s a ready to use solution YouTube isn’t using for some reason.

Technology@lemmy.world•Cory Doctorow: The people who tell you ‘AI is changing everything’ are lyingEnglish
13·17 days agoWell I wouldn’t recommend data & analytics right now, if you treasure your sanity.
Imagine tech debt accumulated over decades absolutely skyrocketing because LLM can generate thousands of lines of SQL or Python that noone understands.I mean, I’m sure the same applies to all tech sectors and likely worse. I do admit it also helps us fix and uncover some old and buried bugs. It’s just not used with any sort of care or long term plan.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Popkorn - A CSS-based OSS alternative format to Lottie and Rive animations
1·20 days ago+ the initial complex animation stutters on Firefox mobile. Other examples run smoothly.
Very interesting anyway, I’ll look into it properly later. I’ve been trying to get some vector animations made and the free(ish) editors I could find were painful to use, so an alternative is most welcome.
It could be the pressure of ‘staying pretty’
making them hate themselves for eating to the point of detriment. I understood that ozempic, the weight loss drug, is also widely used, which could be additional peer pressure.
These people are constantly scrutinised under a microscope, it’s a lot to handle.Obviously all speculations, there could be other reasons.
No, this is BS and not how the real world works. If would be fine if you’ve left it as a meme. Developers (in corps) don’t decide what they’ll work on.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Seriously though what the fuck is wrong with this guy
3·25 days agoI’m genuinely interested in knowing whether a case like this would be picked up at all. In the UK, it appears there is no minimal amount od damage incurred, so in such case I’d really think it’s possible. Db0 don’t even need to be the ones to sue or report the incident according to what I could find.

Technology@lemmy.world•Erin Brockovich Launches Public Registry to Track Data Center ComplaintsEnglish
1·1 month agoIt also says the goal isn’t to track every data center out of the 4000 operating in the US, just the ones the public is concerned about, yet there are over 8000 user submissions shown.
This erodes my confidence in the data, as there appear to be no checks or filters.
Wise man indeed, way ahead his time apparently

I am not so sure this situation would be much better on other services. Nintendo could steamroll smaller companies.
