No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•What would "primordial soup" have tasted like?English
1·1 day agoI think there would be plenty of complex organic molecules. I mean you basically have a planet wide Urey-Miller experiment running for millennia with no life to eat any of the molecules generated, so they’d just… build up. I can’t remember where I read it (so you’ll just need to take my word for it), but some scientist posited that the pre-biotic Earth’s oceans may have had a foot or so of oily sludge floating on them.
But it’s important to consider that, even though they aren’t eaten, these generated compounds aren’t just idly siting around on this pre-biotic Earth. Waves are whipping the ocean sludge into an emulsion on every shore line of the world, tide pools are filling, getting baked by the sun and then washed into the ocean again. Lightning strikes are electrolizing the sludge and lava from primordial volcanos is scorching it. Most importantly with no ozone layer the sun’s UV is blasting the Earth, breaking apart molecules or crosslinking them together into new more complex molecules.

18·2 days agoMy guess is very, very bad. It’s basically a collection of random oily organic compounds with all manner of other elements mixed in. So my guess would be something like used, burnt motor oil.

Technology@lemmy.world•GPT-6 Astra Helped Me Jailbreak My KindleEnglish
1·4 days agoI’m glad for this guy that it worked, but also surprised it worked.
Quite often jailbreaking a device will involve some rather esoteric steps, many of which are actively being patched out by the developer. As such when a LLM tries to piecemeal a guide together from it’s training data you can end up with nonsensical instructions that are cobbled together from many unrelated (and often outdated) methods to a jailbreak.

3DPrinting@lemmy.world•New California ghost gun lawsuit takes aim at company that sells 3-D printer filamentEnglish
78·6 days agoI believe they’ll eventually come for those too.
IMO the real end goal of these laws isn’t to ban ghost guns, it’s to ban plebs from being able to build or create anything at all. 3D printing a plastic piece to fix a broken tab in some gizmo cuts into corporate profits so a manufactured moral panic about ghost guns appears. I’m sure they’ll eventually get to a pipe rifle moral panic at some point to lock down DIY plumbing.
