The fact that Meta has a C-suite position that’s called Chief Privacy Officer is my favorite absurdly ironic fact.
I can’t imagine how can anyone apply to that with a strait face and clear conscience, but that’s prpbably true for most positions at Meta, aside from like Beat Games and the like.
You left? Murderer.

Is it only me being paranoid, or does this sound AI written? Is has exactly the diction AI uses.

Seeing “subscribe and leave a comment bellow” paragraph taken out of the article as presumably the important part in the link synopsis in this post is pretty bizar :D

Haven’t read the article so I can’t actually judge it, but an article about the harm of solars on a website called “Scientific American” is pretty funny. Name a more iconic duo :D

That game is really good, highly recommend. It has slipped my radar since it’s too anime for my tastes, but eventually a friend convinced me to play and it was a pretty good experience. Amazingly written, pretty cool story, and in general a game I’d consider a hidden gem.

Isn’t that basically the definiton of paradox of tolerance?

I’m pretty sad that people have to be perverts and glasses with cameras got such a bad rep.
It is deserved and not surprising, and I’m not trying to defend them, but I was so looking forward to AR glasses with cameras, so I could finally get a working ad-block IRL, which should be easily possible with the tech.
But, that requires a camera. It’s a shame, and I’ll definitely rather continue dealing with ads than support enabling perverts (or Meta, anyway), but it sounded like such a cool use-case.
I hate how there are always groups who have to ruin everything for others :(

Not trying to defend them, and I haven’t looked at the feature set of the new Discord integration, but I can imagine a reason for most of those - assuming, of course, that you can basically chat in through WoW on discord.
Afaik it links channels, but to know if your profile is in the server the channel is on, or join you there, it would need to manage and read servers, no? Of course, there are probably better ways how to do that, that respect your privacy a little bit more.
The friendlist I’m having a hard time justifying, can you send DMs from WoW?
But I do honestly wonder how would a MVP permission set looked like if you tried implementing the same integration they are doing, whatever it is.
But yeah, Microslop hoarding data is probably the reason for most of those.

That is pretty cool!

I had no idea you could get such a long range contacts, that’s cool. It does sound like a nice community.
Also, it sounds pretty impressive to me, even though I’ve never experienced lack of internet/mobile phones. While I had it granted for basically all my life, I have a respect for analog things, and have been a fan of sending letters. I have the luxury that I can romanticize the slower/analog way of living, without actually having to live through it to ruin my experiences, hah!
Thanks, this post has inspired me, while it’s not exactly HAM, I was considering getting Meshcore/Meshtastic relays, which I assume is kind of similar but chat instead of voice, so I might look into it some more. I assume the communities might be similar, and it sounds like a nice hobby.

Thank you, that makes sense. I’ve always been a fan of analog technology (although I never really got the motivation to actually look into it seriously), so I can imagine that being fun.
It does sound pretty interesting, I didn’t know you can get such a long range contacts. I can imagine it is a pretty nice community!

I’ve been wondering, what is amateur radio hobby about? I’m guessing I’m too young to understand it, since when I was growing up we already had a dial-up and then internet and mobile phones became common as I was starting highschool, but it sounds interesting.
I see a lot of notepads next to the radios in the article, is it about just catching and monitoring the traffic for fun, kinda similar to i.e birdwatching but with radio waves? Or do you talk to other radio operators around you and hang out?
I’m honestly curious what do people generally do, when they become amateur radio operators.

Exactly this, especially the last sentence.
I only have pretty basic machine learning knowledge, based on a few Master’s classes at college while I was doing gamedev, and even with that I can tell that the way they are expecting to get AGI by just feeding more data into a language model is simply not happening.
I remember a comparison from one of the AI-pilled tech-bros when AI was starting to get attention, and his metaphor about AGI was something along the lines of “Imagine a difference between a medieval commoner and Albert Einstein, that’s the difference in inteligence AI will soon have to the smartest people we know now”.
But that doesn’t make sense with the current approach. Imagine Einstein writing his cutting-edge theories, and the commoner is watching him behind his shoulder and vetting anything he does. Scratching his ideas, forcing him to redo it, if he doesn’t like it, pointing to a reddit thread about why. There’s no way he would ever finish anything new.
Unless they figure out a completely new way how to do AI reasoning, there is no way we’re getting anywhere near AGI. And that is also becoming more unlikely the longer we go with this approach, because every AI-pilled company is heavily outsourcing all of development to the current models, reducing their employee (and the whole worlds) innovation potential and skill. This is probably the last generation that can do serious academia, unless there are drastic measures done to limit access to AI in education. It’s fucked.

Oh, of course. I mean, it’s an AI race, the more users you have, the better.
But you are right that I have not considered that it could be contributing to the attrocities China is doing domestically, especially with how is their social credit thing going (if that’s still a thing, haven’t really checked on it for decade at this point), adding a good AI to the mix is dreadful to think about.
Soo, yeah. From a strictly selfish point of view, it’s probably better to send your personal data to china, assuming you’re not likely to visit. That is assuming they are not selling their data to the US brokers, but it feels unlikely they’d be allowed to. The cost, however, is you’re helping with enabling a regime with keeping their citizens in line.
On the other hand, US providers are the same, the regime just didn’t have a headstart to have the oppression infrastructure already in place. So, yeah. The only winning move is not to play (or just have a local model).

I don’t think that’s technically possible, at least without it being easy to catch.
If they can’t read a license plate, that’s also a reading - and one they probably flag and send a police car after you immediately.
And especially if they are pairing it with car model/make/scratches recognition, and secondary trackers like phone/rfid/bluetooth devices, even if you managed to keep changing the license plate, so it reads a different valid value every scan, since they are mapping the cars across positions, it would probably get flagged as an anomaly pretty quickly.
Speeding cameras were there for decades at this point, and as far as I know every time someone tried something to avoid them, it didn’t last long. And that was just a single camera. All the cops had to do was stand nearby and stop any anomalies.

Haha, get fucked.
Just this weekend I was experimenting with Deepseek, to compare the costs and see how well it works. Nothing major, I wanted to see how capable it is in rewriting the AI to my hobby game, because it was something I was struggling with for years (it has been released before AI became a thing, and I’m not planning vibecoded updates, but I was curious), and compare costs with what I’m seeing is my AI spending in my job that runs Claude models.
It kind of did the whole thing (it didn’t really work that well, and performance sucked, but it was an improvement in behaviors, so basically on-par with Claude), and throughout the whole process Deepseek was faster, and the whole thing (around 300m tokens) has costed me a whopping 2$.
Doing the same thing with Claude would cost me around a 500-1000$.
I also keep hearing the argument “you’re sending your data to the Chinese!”, and I have been thinking about that, and does it matter? Isn’t it actually a way better outcome?
If I send my data to the US, withing minutes it’s shared with every single data broker who can blast adds and personalize the whole internet around what they thing I want so they can send me their bullshit. It’s also given to Flock and similar companies, so they can track me around the globe. If I send it to the Chinese, I get what? Better ads behind the Great Firewall? Get banned from ever going to China?
Sure, I wouldn’t trust it with any corporate and sensitive data related to my job, the corporate espionage can be a problem, but that’s not my use case. Other that that, it actually sounds like it’s a positive feature, that your data are only being sent to China, instead of US.
Or am I wrong about that? It’s a honest question, I don’t really have a horse in the race for either, and I’m not really planning to keep using AI for my own projects because however addicting, it sucks in the long term, but I wonder if I’m missing something in this regard.

They are being extremely random and utterly stupid with layoffs, all of the larger developers.
I’ve seen the best technical artist being fired right in the middle of transition from built-in rendering pipeline to URP, which is THE thing where you need a technical artist that understands your shaders, especially if the game has a lot of custom ones. There wasn’t even a reason for it, just general layoffs. I’ve seen people who have been in the middle of working on larger features that are important part of the game being fired, without any warning and cut access after the weekend, so there’s no time or chance for handover.
It sucks, even AI could do a lot better job with this, i.e maybe not firing the devs that thave the most important knowledge.
Is it a compression when you need presumably gigabites of a model to reconstruct the data?
It’s basically the same as saying I can shatter compressions records by hashing the thing and using a rainbow table to decompress it.
