They’re not similar at all though. I know it was an inspiration. It’s like calling Minecraft and Infiniminer clone derogatorily, which is what Minecraft was first described as (but not derogatorily).

I’m not sure I’m getting my point across very well, though. Calling shooters “doom clones” is still over simplifying the comparisons, yeah, they’re still very different games, but my point is that they’re still the same genre of game. I would not consider Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress the same genre. In Minecraft you control a single character. In Dwarf Fortress you give orders to a colony. Even the Dwarf Fortress Adventurer mode is still extremely different from Minecraft. You can pick aspects about your character, you have a variety of stats, etc. It’s more of an RPG. Still a very different genre.

Minecraft and Terraria are more similar than Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress.

“Doom clone features guns” this is how these titles should be read. Or for a more modern example, calling Terraria “2d Minecraft” (derogatorily).

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the book “automate the boring stuff with Python.” It focuses on practical examples more than the theory. It’s also available for free since it is licensed under Creative Commons. That said, I haven’t personally checked it out. Just mentioning it as something that focuses on goals and works towards accomplishing them, which sounds like what you’re looking for.

I had a very annoying interaction with this once. I won’t make the company because I’m willing to chalk it up to a one off and I don’t want the message to be “Amazon good” lol. They were able to ship something faster than Amazon, but it never arrived. I reached out about it and theor excuse was basically that they forgot. It sounded like it was a case of someone was supposed to physically move something and it got missed somehow. They gave me a refund for the shipping cost in the end, which was nice, because I told them the entire reason I used them was that they could get it there faster than Amazon but they didn’t.

Amazon is so big. It’s just become this system that we interact with that’s difficult to avoid. It’s frustrating because while that little mishap with a smaller retailer was annoying to me (a gift showed up late for a gift exchange), if it means that the workers don’t need to fucking piss in bottles then it’s worth it.

Eh, I don’t really see a problem with releasing an app before you “should” release one. I don’t think the world improves by discouraging amateurs from sharing their work. Now whether they actually try to learn and grow or just keep vibe coding, who knows.

I guess in my mind I just associate raw pointers with low level. But I guess Rust lets you do that with unsafe blocks still?

Yeah, I think the flow was this,

1. Is this vibe coded?
2. Partially, because of some of the features of Rust.
3. Borrow checker?
4. (Humourous misunderstanding ensues.)

Basically asking if the thing that gave them trouble was the borrow checker.

This is funny, and I do think it’s fair to take little jabs at vibe coders, but just be careful. When I was learning to play a game in the past I asked a question. People thought the answer was obvious because the rules were on the thing I was asking about, but I was so new to the game I didn’t even know what those words meant. If this was any other context, I’d be hesitant to give someone flak for not knowing a technical term like that. (The context being that somebody vibe coded something.)
