  • I know Kojima gets ragged on for being esoteric and weird (which isn’t unfair) but I really do idolize his ability to hone-in on a vibe and communicate it to someone consuming media.

Like I don’t agree with a lot of the choices he made in Death Stranding but damnit if it wasn’t at least memorable and dripping with a VIBE. I can at least point to the issues I have with it and go “okay I see /why/ they did that even though I think it was a miss” and that’s cool.

  • Yeah! I’ve been kind of sick and twisted about this idea lately but I think games feel realistic when you get the sound, shading and physics of things feeling right more than the poly count or even accurate physical appearance.

I was playing Helldivers with some friends earlier today and had a moment where I started laughing my ass off because my character got sent flying and hit his head on a metal box with an ODDLY accurate metal thud sound. The ragdolling and the sound texture were just so dailed in that it felt realistic and had the same tone as a real slapstick accident.

That and little sounds. Picking things up and putting them down with sounds for each, slight jingling, picking up objects that have accurate inertia.

I guess it’s a fools errand to just focus on graphics (something plenty of studios will do) but not a fools errand to focus on the overall experience (something not enough studios do). You can quantify graphical improvement, sure, but it matters less than the whole /vibe/. Maybe that’s why big studios only do graphics so often, it’s the kind of thing you can brag about to your bosses and shareholders.

  • All the circular features and the light blue but with trailing land is real consistent with volcanic atol formations. Couple that with some notable ridgelines in the middle of the islands and you can do some banger biodiversity a la Hawai’i.

Sporadic lore/myth idea for that middle island between the two big ones: The two islands used to be connected by a narrow land bridge until two rival kingdoms got in a war. The battle there was poised to be the deciding one and both kings planned to burn the other’s kingdom and take everything they could. Angered at the bitter fued and careless plans between the greedy kings, a god destroyed both of the armies as they fought and all the land underneath with a terrible force of nature, killing the kings and their armies and preventing the burning of cities and farms that would turn into an eternal fued. All that’s left is a giant crater and the land that’s no longer connected. (Maybe, in reality, it’s a legend perseving the memory of a real explosive erruption ((which would be exceptional on a volcanic island like this that usually has slow erruptions)) and a time of political turmoil. Maybe there really is a god there based on the setting.)

Anyways, this is cool I love worldbuilding like this thank you for sharing : )

  • I mean if we’re purely talking match up for starters? Gotta go with Turtwig. The whole line gets access to ground and rock TMs for coverage. Provided you get the TM, even just Turtwig can learn sandtomb and mud shot. You could do some serious damage in the first two evos with that.

By the numbers on the last Evo, Charizard is set up as a Sp. Attack sweeper but it’s P. def is trashed. Torterra is set up opposite with very solid Physical Stats, low specials, lower speed and solid HP. They’re pretty asymmetric. There’s a world where you switch in Torterra to eat a Charizard fire attack, queue up rockslide and hold your breath that it doesn’t have a special flying move in the pocket that can chew up the rest of you.

Plus, you can use it to set with stealthrock so it might not even be a bad option for leading the party given that it’s beefy enough to eat a smack or two.

  • I still can’t believe that it took corpos 5 years to have this big brain idea.

Might also have been pressure from Bethesda to keep that feather in their cap and not a lot of desire from Obsidian to push the issue while they had other things going for them anyway.

Now that it’s a little more dire maybe Michael’s Soft doesn’t really care about stepping on studio leads’ toes.

I got a bad feeling about a project cooked up in a state of desperation tho. But everything I’m saying is pure speculation anyways so I guess we’ll see what’s what when it’s done.

  • I saw someone else bring it up but it’s worth repeating:

Beekeeping is for honeybees which aren’t necessarily native bees or even the dominant pollinator for certain species of plants (mosquitos are pollinators in wetlands, for example; they only feed on blood when breeding iirc and it’s only the females).

Restoring native pollenator populations is the most ideal since those are the species that tend to promote the native plants through reciprocal systems and thus the rest of a local ecology etc etc.

/How/ that gets solved is its own bag I wish I could say more about but my knowledge on that is very limited.
