This has been going on for awhile. I’ve said it a few times. Saudi Arabia has been quietly buying up a ton of companies along with various Trump allies and sometimes outrighting funding those Trump ally companies.

They invest in many Trump related companies as well as partnering with Russia’s Soverign Weath Fund.

Everyone is so worried about China, they are letting Saudia Arabia buy up everything behind the scenes.

I would trust a government that kills reporters, hangs out with Epstein, or likely helped fund 9/11 terrorist attacks.

There’s a list of PIF investments in Wikipedia. PIF

It is honestly pretty funny that they are currently incapable at protecting themselves even with top of the line equipment. They’ve also spent way too much money on completely useless megaprojects, failed to buy up large swaths of Arizona land for alfalfa, and haven’t built any large internal industries to transition them away from their status as a petrostate aside from a few luxury electric car manufacturing plants.

Recommend Arabs at War: Military Effectiveness, 1948-1991 (Studies in War, Society, and the Military) by Pollack

There are many reasons; one of them is that Arab forces often lie to their commanders so that they have very poor situational awareness, leading to a cascade of further poor decisions in war.

This is because you can and will be executed for failure.

Unfortunately, you can also be executed for being too competent, which can be seen as threatening to your superiors.

Also, maintenance. And sand. I hate sand.

There are many other factors and exceptions, depending on when and where.

The Gulf States are (IMO) facing the problem that they need a way to stay relevant as oil (or their geopolitical position where they get to buy security with oil) becomes obsolete but putting large-scale productive capital in their countries is going to automatically empower the people manning, operating, supplying and otherwise getting actual production out of said capital (which is to say the bourgeoisie and the proletariat). For a petrostate largely run along aristocratic lines that’s a problem, because the new economic forces created by this transition will demand a political voice and Saudi aristocrats absolutely don’t want to give them that. Industrialization was (with some twists and turns) good for European countries, but look what it did to European nobility. This is also why they don’t create an effective army; without a strong, popular civilian authority (which none of them have) nothing will stop it from seizing power. Their big problem here is that you can’t modernize in half-measures; you have to go all-in or not because the first step will drag you the rest of the way, probably violently if you resist. Other third world dictators for the most part have this problem too, but while they are forced to deal with it today Gulf monarchies are buying time with oil so they get to deal with it tomorrow. Fundamentally their behavior makes more sense when you realize that they’re trying to thread a needle through a hole that doesn’t exist.

And that’s enough Karl Marx for one day I think. Remember, the answer is always communism.

I disagree, please look at Trump’s son in law Kushner’s business dealings in Saudi Arabia (and elsewhere in middle east). The many billions of dollars are “officially” in his private equity firm (and accompanying shell companies).

Russian oligarchs are small change and have nothing near as much influence (due to less money)

Saudi Arabia can’t beat Israel for influence, but you know, we formed Israel and they’re like our colony/military base in the middle east; so I don’t think any nation can match that influence, we’re connected as allies, Israel could not exist without the USA.

I am not saying that Trump doesn’t accept money from Russia or anybody else, though, and exert influence for them. He’ll take money from everywhere and make “deals” with anyone who has billions of dollars.

On the one hand we could imagine them clamping down on riske material and promote islamicism, but to be real having lived in the gulf for many years they care more about money than anything else. So prepare for more neoliberal enshittification.

Saudi Arabia and UAE are absolutely not going to be promoting Islamism (Qatar is more complicated). Islamists are the biggest enemies of entrenched authoritarian regimes in most of the Middle East, so even ones with a veneer of religion are trying hard to gain legitimacy as secular nationalist dictators. For example remember that one story about the UAE being like "Britain harbors dangerous islamists? The translation here is “this foreign liberal democracy is harboring enemies of my authoritarian regime.” If anything both of them (but probably not (Qatar) are already pushing for more bellicose US policy in the Middle East, because they’re vassal regimed whose survival depends on the continued interest of their imperial masters.

With a hefty dose of Israel support because if they went against Israel, 1, the US wouls get angry and 2, people would start questioning why the big rich Muslim countries aren’t doing anything to help their brothers and sisters in Gaza.

Saudi Arabia and UAE are tight with Israel (because they get US military support for backing it), so it’s not unlikely that Israel would get some windfall out of this, though the other person has the cause all wrong and in any case I doubt either country is much more pro-Israel than US establishment media.

Imagine if the didn’t back out the Embracer deal when they were buying up all the indie companies. They could have rolled it all under EA and killed close to 40% of the market.

Just sending plausible invoices to large corporations works waaaaaay more often than you’d think. The only downside is that the penalties are severe if you’re caught. Have an exit strategy.
