A lot of things ruined both these franchises and saying it was all Abrams gives him too much credit.
Mostly, the fact that capitalism insists on making more of them is the problem. More of them, while also insisting that the focus groups need parts of it changed so that the youth or whoever will watch it. Abrams making shit content is a symptom of that.
nah capitalism was perfectly capable of producing good versions of those things. ST09 is very clearly lead by someone who doesn’t like or understand why people like star trek. there’s no capitalist reason to hire the worst possible guy, he wasn’t even cheaper than some upstart indie would’ve been.
like, zach snyder comic book movies are bad because he’s a reactionary idiot who doesn’t get comic books, we’ve seen other people make good comic book adaptations (or at least better liked ones) and the DC animated side was mostly killing it for over a decade while he was shitting out his slop so it’s hard for me to blame the DCEU being shit primarily on capitalism when the other tentacles of the beast were putting out stuff people liked.
star wars has some really good books they could’ve adapted instead, like the Thrawn stories, or they could have hired one person to have a consistent vision for the whole trilogy instead of the weird split thing they did and where nobody talked to anyone else. We saw other companies make coherent multi-film projects at the same time, and star wars wasn’t even chasing marvel the way DC was.

I disagree on adapting the old EU books (Thrawn or otherwise). We would have ended up with a MCU-ified Star Wars. While what we have now is filled with lots of trash, there’s at least some interesting/entertaining swings that have been taken (Andor, Skeleton Crew, The Acolyte).
Besides, a Thrawn trilogy adaptation would have to include aging Harrison Ford reading lines from a chair in a space t-shirt (if they could even drag him along for 3 movies lol).
Filoni has been scavenging shit off the EU for a while now, so we’ll continue to get lil bits and pieces mixed into the new media.

Yeah, the OT and PT at least had a semi-coherent vision laid out (as coherent as George Lucas can be lmao). It’s pretty clear that they didn’t have any sort of skeleton planned out, and JJ Abrams wrestling back the series after The Last Jedi was sloppily executed (has he ever made something with a satisfying ending though?).
