Nintendo is so proud of the feature that it even included a little C button right on your Joy-Con (which was a point of excited speculation before the reveal) so you can jump into Game Chat whenever you like.

Unfortunately, it also tried to bury the fact that this Game Chat feature will actually require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription once the free trial period ends on March 31, 2026.

Now, you may be wondering what the button does if you don’t have a subscription? Thankfully, Nintendo’s vice president of player and product experience, Bill Trinen, was interviewed by Polygon on that very same topic. Trinen explains that the button will let you “find out about the NSO subscription there and get a sense of some of the functionality.” It’s basically a button that asks you to pay up.

We’ve gotten to the point where button functions are microtransactions…

This is why I emulate games and just use Linux

I’ve been trying to vote with my wallet and not participate in things I don’t agree with morally, but it seems like I’m always in the vast minority, and I’m sadly the only one who seems to care about this stuff in my circle of friends at least. I guess the average person doesn’t get excited for new things and vigorously research the thing they’re buying/getting themselves into beforehand these days.

Nintendo recieved nothing but praise for their Switch 2 release sales even after all these articles warning you how much they’re going to rip you off and treat you like crap. Average players don’t seem to care and will buy it as long as they still get their expected dopamine hit. We live in an assbackwards world where being a toxic anti-consumer company is rewarded and doesn’t affect sales whatsoever. People seem to enjoy having less control or features of the things they spent lots of money on “owning”…

At the time articles like this were coming out, all I wanted was to pray on Nintendos downfall and watch them suffer and receive actual consequences or backlash for once damnnit! At least enough so that they would feel pressured to change their ways. Of course Nintendo got away with it all such as normalizing $80 games and undoubtedly paved the way for Rockstar to follow suit and increase the price of GTA6 later on as well. As always, we get fucked no matter how hard we complain.
