I have a friend from college who is a freemason. He was working-class, like the rest of us. As far as I know, since I never delved much in this subject, there are freemasons from all spheres, such as military officers, small business owners, workers, capitalists, intellectuals etc. I’ve seen a Masonic Lodge even in my wife’s poor small town in Brazil.

What I think about Freemasons and all the secret societies like the Jacobins, is that many of them have seen their glory days during the 18th and 19th century, a time when a bourgeois class was ascending in power and they needed a way to organize politically since the monarchies in Europe were very repressive. I think from the end of the 19th century onward, most of these secret societies were superseded by actual political parties. Our ML (and variants) bros are the new Jacobins, Freemasons etc. I mean, those still exist but don’t exert influence society as they did before.
