There are a lot of things people do that kill sharks or make the waters uninhabitable for sharks. When people hear that, they think “good, I don’t want to get et by a shark when I go swimmin” because that’s how they talk. This is supposed to draw attention to how sharks don’t actually pose a threat to swimmers, and highlight their importance in the aquatic ecosystems.

I’m glad he didn’t get eaten by sharks but it would have been really funny if he got eaten by sharks. It’s a conundrum.
