.Pet dogs have ‘extensive and multifarious’ impact on environment, new research finds
An Australian review of existing studies has argued that “the environmental impact of owned dogs is far greater, more insidious, and more concerning than is generally recognised”.
The carbon footprint of pets is also significant. A 2020 study found the dry pet food industry had an environmental footprint of around twice the land area of the UK, with greenhouse gas emissions – 56 to 151 Mt CO2 – equivalent to the 60th highest-emitting country.
Let alone in Austrailia the enormous death rate from koalas from dogs.
Owning other beings leads to widespread problems. Imagine that.

Regardless of environmental impacts, owning an individual for the purpose of companionship and emotional gratification is exploitation, and so not vegan.
This is not a culture to bring an animal you love into. Would you have a child knowing that someone is inevitably going to own your child and they will be treated as property? Where a police officer having a bad day can just shoot them dead without consequence? And everything else about our culture and their place in it that implies.
People consider rescues to be a kind of a loophole. It is still a dangerous compromise. It is dangerous because as soon as you are getting a benefit from the relationship, it warps your perspective. How many years did you lie to yourself about the animals you ate? If you think you won’t lie to yourself about the animal you love to spend time with, you didn’t learn anything. The money spent taking care of a rescue could take care of several animals at a dedicated sanctuary, where the effects of self deception are also mitigated.
