The entire reason I brush my Izzy. She’s a shorthair entirely able to groom herself but she’s the worlds pukingest cat so every hairbrush full of fur I take out of her is one fewer hairball. I’ve also got a tube of CAT LAX (style original) from my vet.
I mean, with their rough tongues they basically do already.
The hairball reduction is well worth doing the rest of him.
