Republicans are now openly admitting that Donald Trump’s new tariffs, set for April 2 or “Liberation Day,” will hurt American consumers.
Senator Tim Sheehy acknowledged “short-term pain” for Montana, comparing it to home remodeling, while Senators Tuberville and Lankford used similar metaphors about temporary discomfort.
Meanwhile, Trump told NBC he “couldn’t care less” if car prices rise, contradicting his campaign claims that foreign countries would bear tariff costs.
The tariffs, which include 25% hikes on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on Chinese goods, will impact everyday items like groceries, cars, and construction materials, affecting nearly every U.S. sector.

Ahh, the olde “it will get worse before it gets better” defense of hugely damaging policy. It will only get worse.
It will get worse before it gets even worse.
It’s always darkest before the light goes completely out.
It will get better … some time next century … but maybe the next century after.
Even if these tarrifs were getting guarantees of good paying manufacturing jobs coming to America it would be years before they are realized. Meaning years of economic hardship for those already in dire economic conditions. And with the likelihood of Republicans dismantling what little there is of US safety nets, to give massive tax breaks to those with plenty, it would go from bad to worse to catastrophic before any remote signs of relief.
Also, remodeling ones home is, usually, done because the homeowner wants to and can afford it. Not because someone told them to. This more akin to a contractor breaking into your home and starting a remodel then having the audacity to charge you for it.
More akin to a contractor breaking into your home, demolishing your kitchen then leaving to remodel some rich assholes kitchen all the while charging you for all the work and leaving you without a place to cook.
To your point - meanwhile the uber wealthy will benefit from his tax cuts and weather the storm with no issues while everyone that’s not a part of that miniscule group will languish in the swamp he’s filling up for all of us to live in.
This is a clear to see recipe for disaster.
Tariffs are a tax on the consumer. There’s no question, people need to educate themselves.
Even if there’s a coherent policy goal behind the tariffs, which I doubt, achieving that goal with punitive taxes on undesirable goods means that the greatest burden falls on people with the lowest income. Reaching the same goal with promotional tax incentives means the burden is paid through our normal, slightly progressive tax system and falls more on the wealthy. Tariffs and sales taxes are the worst kind of taxes.
Republicans are only worried about their wallets.
Republicans are only concerned about hurting the “others” (whoever it is on that day) … they only worry about their wallets once they know someone other than them got hurt.
What? I thought getting the entire world pissed at us, divesting from our goods and services, and relying even more on China was the goal. Oopsies!
