politics @lemmy.world•GOP Crusade Against ‘Fraud’ Just Means Big Safety-Net Cuts
2·1 day agoIf banks took the same approach to fraud then every hotline, website, and phone app would be shut down and people could ONLY do their transactions in-person.
AND THERE WOULD STILL BE FRAUD!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is checking age at os-level that bad?
27·2 days agoAlso this goalpost will move almost immediately. What if the parent doesn’t understand why the OS is asking for a DOB and they type whatever? What if the parent doesn’t log out and the kids use the adult account? What if the kid is really smart and bypasses the check (I think this could actually get bypassed easily)?
Rather than rolling back this rule they’ll just go even further and say the OS must analyze every action and utilize every input (e.g. microphone, camera) to determine the age of the current user and that controls need to be at the hardware level and OSes need to get state certified, etc. Before long only Windows, Apple, Google, and maybe RedHat can comply. An entire community of Linux enthusiasts destroyed. And as some bills have stated, rather vaguely, this can apply to something as simple as a calculator!

3·2 days agoEven if they’re out of ideas to make it “innovative” they can go back to basics with something that doesn’t spy on you, doesn’t have built-in GPS, doesn’t have cooling zones, doesn’t have seat warmers and so on, and be the best affordable EV you can find.

Bombings will continue until you pick a leader Trump approves of.

4·2 days agoIt’s usually fine code but it just doesn’t follow the same conventions and flow. It’s kind of like reading a novel typed in block letters written in 3rd person then suddenly it’s cursive letters and 1st person.

11·3 days agoSeniors reviewing code is fine but only when, as someone else mentioned, the code writer is learning from the review. The AI doesn’t learn at all and the Jr Dev probably learns very little because they didn’t understand the original code. Reviewing AI code often turns into me rewriting most of it.

7·3 days agoI always say I’m not interested in asking an LLM to add 2 + 2 for me. Of course my managers are always pushing us to use LLMs and coworkers keep suggesting we replace efficient, testable, and consistent processes with AI. If you’re going to use it at least think of scenarios that are hard to code for and it would take you at least 10 min to solve.

6·3 days agoMaps has been hard. If CoMaps had better business info (just basic stuff, not even pics) and could suggest alternate routes (not based on traffic, just like 2-3 options with roughly the same ETA) I think I’d use it way more.

These things can get pricey so I think it’s reasonable to say something like “pizza and drinks for the kids”.
