There’s that, but also whoever controls the panama canal has a huge amount of power in global trade. Almost anything made in China and sold East of the Mississippi in the US went through the canal. Almost anything Made in the western US and sold in the EU went through the canal.
Panama is also going through a drought that is lowering the levels in the reservoirs they use to raise the locks. This is causing them to raise crossing fees and restrict traffic. The line-go-up people hate that, as they’d turn panama into a desert before they slowed the increase in their profits.
