Lol I have the 8 GB 2020 MacBook Air M1 and the thing still screams. What is it with Lemmy and the 8 GB debate? What are y’all doing??

I’m a huge fan of both Apple and Linux but what finally helped me to understand the difference was using something closer to UNIX, in my case FreeBSD.

Why? Because I’d always heard that modern macOS is based on UNIX (even partially on old FreeBSD) but the difference between UNIX and Linux never “clicked” until I explored UNIX on its own.

Modern macOS sets its default shell these days to zsh but I believe still ships an old bash. Actually, a lot of the userland utilities are going to be old and out of date. You’ll notice quirks with them (compared to Linux) that often comes from its background in UNIX.

Personally I use a TON of packages from Linux that have been ported to macOS via Homebrew as do many developers (like me) and users.

All this is to say that under the shiny proprietary Apple GUI there is some familiarity with Linux but at the cost of more UNIX-like behavior (albeit unique even among UNIXes).

I’ve never had to install it; granted I only disable my Google blockers when I need to do something serious (like paying bills) but I’ve never installed the app.

I see this a lot: why post then? If you don’t want anyone to answer you then why engage in the first place?

While Android users are effectively locked out, iOS users, even those running older versions, have more flexibility.

This is what I’m not understanding: are they doing user-agent sniffing or perhaps using a proprietary JavaScript API? Couldn’t de-Googled browsers just pretend to be iOS (as ugly as that would be)?

Honestly I think Tux still looks more like he’s just gotten laid rather than feeling full from eating but that’s just me.

I once witnessed a friend call her sister a consumer (“you’re such a consumer!”) for being such a burden on the family (not working, asking for handouts, etc). The situation wasn’t great but it definitely cracked me up — genius-level insult.

Is it really by default? I had it on for a long, long time but thoughts others had it off by default. Now I have it off by default too but turn it on for people I actually care about.

You can block in-app tracking and ads largely with DNS-based blocking.

I’ve been blocking 99% of Google’s domains for ~5 years now and only a handful of websites I actually need (utilities) become problematic without it.

I’m weak as shit and I could kick his ass. I’m not even the kind of guy that would say something like this but fuck it, this guy fucking sucks.

For me I think growing up constantly told “you’re so smart, you’ll figure it all out” was more detrimental than helpful. It led me to believe I’d cruise through life pretty easily. I’m happy with where life’s taken me and the point I’m at now but I could’ve gotten there a lot faster if I would’ve applied myself more. Just because a kid is into computers doesn’t mean they’ll be some sort of genius.

I feel this way about 90% of smells. I really hate candles (even ones that smell fantastic) because it feels like the air is poisoned.

Having quit smoking/vaping a year ago I’m still shocked by how nasty people smell in public. We all know Los Angeles has some stench (piss and shit everywhere) but in places like theaters, Costco or other packed retail stores, etc. I’m just blown away by how bad it all smells.
