New patches came out this week providing critical improvements to the first Shiren the Wanderer and Torneko’s Great Adventure games’ translations on the Super Famicom, so I’m poking those. The Aeon Genesis patch for Fūrai no Shiren in particular was a major pain point for me for ages, what with it rendering riceballs as “onigiri” in JUST ACCORDING TO KEIKAKU style, but while some enemies and items (Haboon, otogiri-so) still maintain their Japanese names, the new patch is a huge improvement and fixes a lot of bugs the AG patch had, such as the “arrow fell on the ground” message not displaying, or the pickpocket guys never displaying how much gitan they stole. Very nice.

The Torneko patch uses the script from this month’s new official HD re-release so it should be rad, if I can swallow my burning hatred for DraQue.

It’s pretty cool if you’re gaining independence for the first time. For me, the early 20s period was finally getting out from under my parents and learning to live on my own, cook stuff, all of that. “Onset of schizophrenia, personality disorders” sounds pretty suspect to me. 3DS Pokemon takes me back, I put like 200 hours into Alpha Sapphire back when it came out.

This week I started poking the original Guilty Gear, because how do I combo. How does anyone ever play fighting games, goddamn. But Guilty Gear just looks cool so I wanna play it. Mostly just been messing around in training so far.

I like how obviously crushed it is for the PS1’s benefit, like it’s a very good looking game but has a lot less animation frames than Capcom’s Saturn fighters because there’s only 1MB of VRAM to work with. Similarly the game has tons of sfx and voice samples and they are all BITCRUSHED SO BAD. I think I’ve heard better ADPCM playback on a mega drive…

You’d need to write some amount of differing blurbs depending on player gender

Extremely loud incorrect buzzer noise. The easy solution would just be to make everyone gay, which really would sort it out. For what it’s worth you can also write bi or even pansexual characters, but they have to be believable about it. Pans better actually reflect attraction regardless of gender, is all, instead of this numb lifeless thing that bends to the player.

I mean, do you? The idea of platonic “social links” is not a bad one but the Harvest Moon games never had it to my knowledge, so you could always just cut this. Plus, if you’re feeling brave you’d have the ability to keep it platonicstyle with characters of compatible gender, to avoid amatonomrativity. That would be even more work, though, because actually fully reflecting gender and romance and shit is pretty hard, which is probably why Stardew just takes the least-resistance approach of “minimum flexibility required for whatever the player wants”.

I remember the ‘everyone dates everyone’ feel of it fondly and not as a negative. Certainly better then having to play male Shepard to date Tali in Mass Effect.

Fwiw Mass Effect does actually gate romance path by gender, which goes to show that you have to do more than just that to be good. I also sailed through my first ME playthroughs without even the implication of romance from any of the characters, which was weird and kinda funny.

Actually I’m gonna push back on this too. Since there are only the two binary genders, I refuse to believe that altering this would have made Stardew impossible to make. Everyone in the valley being textually bisexual might really enhance the game, too, if you went that direction. I think the bigger issue is that that’s not the game Concernedape wanted to make, and so you have this extremely lifeless set of romance quests that is at times less enjoyable than literally swapping the protagonist gender on Friends of Mineral Town.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord.

This here is the Commodore 64 version, which supports the Commodore 1764 RAM Expansion Module. Non-shockingly, Wizardry fucking rules. I’ve been mapping some of the floors myself, it’s a very chill game to just play for hours. If I was in 1981 I would have become a Wizardry addict tbh.
