Yeah it’s not as clear as it could be. I wonder if anything is lost in translation. I clicked to the study it links to which is by Chinese scientists and it had an abstract but requires an institutional login or a payment to see more detail.

All good. It’s clear that you’re passionate as we all are and I appreciate the feedback. We’re all learning and trying to find the best solutions as well. Criticism is important but discussions can sometimes break down easily here is all.

You bring up a lot of good points and I think those things are certainly aspirational. Cooperatives are great and worth working towards and highly beneficial which I say that from having once been part of a large coop who worked with cooperatives in Africa. I personally don’t think state-control of anything should be the ultimate goal but as you pointed there are reasons some funding is lagging behind in certain regions that can be nuanced and complex. For some regions, maybe this could give them a bit more of a chance?

Ultimately I absolutely agree that this is the decision of citizens of African nations on a local level and private funding and implementation is not a long term solution. I would love to see more of the forms you mentioned and hear more from African voices . In a world largely dominated by the English language due to colonialism, maybe articles like this can at least be reminders of issues not always covered in the news and potential solutions. It certainly generated some good discussion and I’ll check out the links you shared.

I didn’t read it that way at all and don’t have any issue with those things. It’s just one possible proposition that the authors made and I shared to this forum. . Could you word your responsea a bit more constructively?

Yeah it had a lot of good insight into history and how it applies to the present moment that hopefully inspires some people. I’m glad you liked it. Unfortunately the closest they are to the Fediverse is Bluesky for now but hopefully you enjoy getting their updates.

The order of this list is highly debatable but this is a literal top 100 list. It might be easier to start with two critics top 10 lists here . Most big streaming sites like HBO are highlighting the movies they run that are up for awards but you might be able to find some on free sites like kanopy , although several are still in theaters.

I’m not sure if you’re asking me personally as I didn’t publish the article so I can’t answer for Solarpunk Stories but I’m aware of how problematic Substack is and I certainly agree that an alternative platform that’s not centralized in corporate power that also works with Fascists would be more in line with Solarpunk ethics and praxis.

I think it was meant to be a very concise overview and update of their prior entry which elaborates a bit more. You can find that here . Those should definitely be included in a larger conversation but some might argue that those are solarpunk adjacent so maybe they wanted to keep it strictly to variations of solarpunk 🤷🏼‍♂️

Since you like Psycho, I’d recommend Peeping Tom by Michael Powell or several movies by Mario Bava from the era like The Girl Who Knew Too Much and Blood and Black Lace. Eyes Without a Face is also Great. Also Rosemary’s Baby and Repulsion by Polanski. For Japanese Films you should check out Yojimbo, Sword of Doom, and 2 by Seijun Suzuki ; Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter. Also check out Dr. Strangelove by Kubrick and if you like New Hollywood westerns , etc Bonnie and Clyde and The Wild Bunch are requisites. French New Wave stuff is important so maybe Breathless and Band of Outsiders and of course Melville’s “Le Samourai.” Spaghetti Westerns were very influential and Leone’s Man With No Name Trilogy ( A Fistful of Dollars, For a few Dollars More, The Good the Band and the Ugly ) and Once Upon A time in The West are a good starting point. There are so many but those are a few recommendations that might send you down further rabbit holes.
