  • I was going to say something along those same lines. There is so much American influence in games and Americans are used to regularly consuming media that more or less accurately depicts the things in real life that we are familiar with, that it doesn’t really stand out at all. The feeling can still come up if a game is recreating a very specific location that is quite familiar; I can remember feeling it for the first time in GTA IV as someone who regularly visited NYC, and more recently with Insomniac’s Spider-Man. But more generalized things like house designs, chimneys, signs… No, not really. As for the 90s aspect of it… I am still waiting for a game, or even any media, that actually accurately depicts the 90s as they were here, and not “how we remember them” where it’s some mish-mash of random 80s and 90s pop culture mixed together and everything is bright colors and neon, blacklight glow in the dark, with everything covered in abstract patterns of funky shapes and squiggly lines and backwards baseball caps and skateboards. I want the feeling OP is having.
