Since I invariably wind up getting “name suits” types of comments, here’s the explanation behind it:
Around the turn of the millennium, I was trying to come up with a username to use on a particular site that had a shortish character count limit for usernames. My goal was something related to the fact that I would often be making my points in arguments with “holier-than-thou” types by taking what they were saying, and turning it on its head so the offensive stuff was directed back at them.
I also happened to learn shortly beforehand that many years ago “'ape” was somewhat commonly used as a verb to mean “imitate” or “copy.”
I’m sure you can figure the rest out.

66·10 days agoA single gene therapy shot helped people born deaf start hearing again
I can’t help but find this sentence amusing. If born deaf, aren’t they hearing for the first time? I know the explanations for this, but it’s still sloppy writing, IMHO.
You must not be an American…
I hadn’t, but I did forget about most of these. I wonder how much they influenced my preference for just a plain black background vs perhaps just being used to the readability it provided old green and amber TTY terminals.

70·1 month agoOf course the cops keep using it - payments from the inevitable lawsuits don’t come out of their pockets, so why give a shit when there are quotas to make? No accountability breeds irresponsibility.

Trans@lemmy.blahaj.zone•The FDA is taking public comments on a petition to create a federal registry of trans womenEnglish
0·1 month agoThank you for the response! I’m glad I didn’t trip over myself in my rush to express what I was feeling while it was fresh in my head.
I’m gonna wait a day or two to make sure nobody else has any suggestions before I submit. I’ll post my final version if it changes in any significant way, & confirm submission when I do.
I’m strongly leaning toward including my actual name as an indication of how seriously I take this, but I’m not sure it’s worth the risk - both of tying it to my screenname (which goes back at least a quarter century for me on various sites), and the risk of inviting IRL retribution. I know it’s unlikely to make any real difference in what the assholes running things currently are likely to do, but I’d also rather not give them an easy excuse to be dismissive of my input. Any thoughts on that?

0·1 month agoWhat “category” should we choose?
Below is my comment so far, made without much thought (outside of trying to keep it clean & vaguely respectable) because this administration & its supporters have depressed me so much already that I just typed what first came to mind. Constructive input is welcome because I’m not trans (but dammit we’re ALL human beings deserving of respect and fair treatment), so I’m not sure if I’m screwing something up, or should be taking a less emotional approach for better effect. TIA.
When does the unjustifiable hate stop?! When do people stop interfering in the lives of others that have no effect upon their own? When does reason, logic, sanity, fairness, compassion, respect, etc start to matter to this administration? There is NO reasonable justification for this nonsense. There is more justification for making a registry for those hating people who are different from them because there is PLENTY of historical evidence demonstrating that THEY are the REAL threat to society.

World News@lemmy.world•Cuban protesters ransack Communist office as energy crisis deepensEnglish
3·1 month agoNo, but they are close enough to that to be having economic effects upon Taiwan by reducing the number of potential trading partners willing to risk inviting China’s wrath. Ship captains would likely rather avoid a run-in with China’s Navy.
EDIT FOR ALL THE DOWNVOTERS:

World News@lemmy.world•Cuban protesters ransack Communist office as energy crisis deepensEnglish
1·1 month agoOne could argue China is right on the borderline of effectively doing that, likely scaring off some trading partners and thereby causing economic impacts - albeit significantly less severe than those currently experienced by Cuba.

7·1 month agoTaiwan brings major economic (and other) benefits to its “supporting” countries via its technological exports & is thus too important to allow to fall into China’s hands if it can be avoided.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner, ladies & gentlemen!

Sorry I’m just getting to this. I had three significant issues happen pretty much one right after the other, and was not on here much for a while (one of them was my phone completely bricking itself in an unrecoverable fashion, so it wasn’t easy to get back here).
Anyway, just wanted to let you know I hadn’t forgotten about this, and just submitted the comment a bit ago. Sorry for the delay.
