Technology@piefed.social•Storing Solar Energy As Ice For Air ConditioningEnglish
1·24 days agoIs it?
92kWh/m^3 of energy is a lot of cooling. It’d be hard to not be effective.

Technology@piefed.social•Storing Solar Energy As Ice For Air ConditioningEnglish
2·24 days agoI think youre misunderstanding one thing, which is that the ice is a replacement for batteries. While the system had a small battery for running a small pump and fan, its a small cheap one that doesn’t store much and the water has substantially more energy, equivalent to something like a large lithium battery.
The thermal battery is also far smaller, cheaper, and more robust than a lithium battery and it won’t deteriorate with repeated cycling. The obvious trade off is that in this case it can only be used for refrigeration and only down to 0C. So while its very niche, it is quite effective for home air conditioning.

5·3 months agoI actually find the fact that becoming a more militarized wartime state has induced similar instances of violence in Russia to be really interesting. Up until this point, most other countries assumed there was something unique about US culture that resulted in school shootings, but showing some sort of hypothetical link between wartime mobilization and mass violence is interesting and the US interventionism has only been increasing along with their mass shootings.

Health - Resources and discussion for everything health-related@lemmy.world•Eating red meat may increase your risk of type 2 diabetes – not a lot of people know thatEnglish
1·1 year agoIn my experience people don’t like being told their diet is bad.
Feral horses are a problem in the American plains and west with one of the issues being the fact their carcasses will attract grizzlies or black bears which can then encroach on humans. Hiking out, digging a massive pit, and then burying a horse really isn’t an option so they blow them up to increase the speed of decomposition.
They also degrade and destroy native grassland and the whole problem could be easily solved with a cull of the herds, but some dipshit-wanabe-cowboys are obsessed with “saving” “wild” horses so now the federal government has to spend over a $100 million on horse contraception to keep the population vaguely in check.
TDLR: We blow up a bunch of horses corpses every year because of a politically connected nonprofit.
Don’t eat the onion.

19·2 years agoThe Federal Government actually owns most of the west. Its the reason why there’s more land for public recreation and national parks in that region of the country.
You can typically hike, camp, or explore BLM land, which is the majority of it, as much as you want so long as you don’t start any fires or litter.

There sure was a lot of hand wringing before you wrote down what your actual problem with immigration was.
