  • Not really. It took about fourty years of discussion, strife, protests, civil desobedience, and no less than five widely reported major nuclear accidents - Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and the three plants at Fukushima - to get there. And renewable energy is a child of the quest to get better energy sources, thst stsrted in mid-seventies, and started to become mature with megawatt wind power plants in the early naughties. We would not have these without the antinuclear movement. I know all that well because I studied applied physics and renewable energy in Germany since 1988.

The decades old logo of the antinuclear movement

… shows a fiery sun for a reason.

  • And much worse our actions as a human civilization are right now causing a hothouse world and a mass extinction that will kill much of sentient life on our beautiful lovely planet. It seems to abstract for most people except scientists but I struggle with grief about it. And it is entirely our choice, we are responsible for what is happening.

If people would only understand that we are nothing more than a part of this beautiful world. We are all leaves of one and the same tree of life. The only place in the universe that we know of where life exists. If religions are about cherishing and respecting life, our ancestor’s attempts to pass on what is really important have dramatically failed.

  • So how would you feel it was justified if you were only allowed to drive 10-15 km/h on your bicycle, to help solve the oil crisis?

The thing is that when I use a bicycle, I do not put a burden on other people, or the community, or expose others to deadly risks. But you do when you drive a car, and that gives society the right to restrict its use, for example in terms of speed. Even when your car is electric, it exposes others to risk of accidents, particulate matter that causes pulmonary problems, dissuades others from using a bicycle in the city, and so on.

And apart from that, I wouldn’t participate in online discussions where I get the impression that people are trolling. It is interesting how often that happens when the discussion comes to things that might even slightly affect the interests of the car industry or the fossil industry. It is as if these industries know that they cannot win any reasonable and rational discussion, and resort to astroturfing and trolling instead. Just to make you aware of these patterns.

  • Speed limits are for safety, too. One reason I favour them - I use the bicycle all the time and it makes my transport safer for me and other cyclists. And, more people using bikes means more spare capacity in public transport which matters a lot for people which are too old, too ill, or need to go long distances. With driving slower, you help that transition.

Also, speed limits make electric cars more affordable for those fellow citizens which so far couldn’t afford to buy one, since driving at lower speed needs substantially less power and thus battery capacity and performance, which is one of the costliest aspects of an electric vehicle.

  • One interesting aspect is that while high fuel prices are very bad for poor countries, it could be that the hit is somewhat dampened by the fact that e.g. most people im Asia use fuel for transport in a much more efficient way than the US. If you share a bus ride with 100 other people and only need to travel 10 kilometers, this might eat less percents of your relative income than when you need to daily travel 100 miles alone in a supertruck.

Which is also a big advantage of Europe compared to the US.

  • After the gym and cooking a dinner I simply am so wiped I can’t do anything. Instead of making software, or doing music, I just end up watching tv, heck I’m usually too dead to even play video games.

You should work less. There are times where this is necessary. But constantly overworking has bad consequences, it can for example kill your most precious relationships quickly, and is very bad for your health in the long run. In the end, you work to live, not the other way around. And Godfather will not applaude you and give you a thumbs up if you come to heaven’s reception desk and have never done anything else than worked in your life.
