  • You deserve the right to exist as much as anybody else.

Hope you can get the police involved, if possible. Not sure where you’re from, but I know small town politics don’t always make that a real possibility. Rapists too often get away with their crimes because people are too scared to come forward and that’s just the sad reality of the country we live in now.

I’ll echo the other commenters - if you can get out of here, do it quickly. America is on a very dark trajectory. Don’t let yourself continue to be victimized.

  • Consider how bad things are in Central America right now and then remember that despite the abject violence currently happening in many countries there right now, the U.S. still harbors deep anti-immigrant sentiments and we regularly turn away people fleeing said violence and return them to the custody of their would-be killers.

Yeah, you won’t need an answer to this question when the times comes for us. You’ll know, and you’ll be willing to get on that boat or airplane leaving for anywhere else even if they aren’t accepting refugees or the odds are slim that anywhere else will take you, because the alternative is certain death.

You’re probably better off trying to emigrate now rather than waiting for things to get worse, if you are in a position where you can make that choice. Some people make their livings preying upon those who are desperately seeking an escape, so it’s a bargain right now to leave for the cost of a plane ticket and whatever elbow grease you need to put in to achieve citizenship abroad.

  • Is there a way to use WhatsApp on a non-smart phone?

WhatsApp has a browser app you can use, turning it into something more like an instant messenger akin to Skype while you’re on a computer. Not sure if you need a phone to manage the account or not, but you could keep a cheapo burner phone for situations like that and then just toss it in a drawer and ignore it until you need to make changes again.

  • The Supreme Court can’t take back an amendment the way they can strike down laws (I.e. by ruling it unconstitutional for whatever reason), because it IS constitutional by definition.

Yeah, but the problem is that the Supreme Court are also the arbiters of the interpretation of the document, and there’s nothing to suggest that they can’t simply come out and say “Oh, it means two consecutive terms”, which is exactly what Putin does in Russia with their term limits - some stooge takes over for a term and then Putin wins in yet another landslide.

I mean, the 22nd Amendment is very clean, IMO. “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice” is pretty unambiguous, but I really can’t put anything past this corrupt administration. A coup is probably more likely, but if Trump can somehow get the law on his side he won’t need to, so I’m sure he would prefer that route.

  • I like to ask anybody in a tirade against “wokeness” or “DEI” what their definitions of those words are and what they find objectionable about it.

If they can define it correctly (most can’t), they usually can’t put into words what they don’t like about it other than that the idea of other people being treated equitably and respectfully makes them feel threatened , vulnerable, or marginalized. Which is absurd, but expecting these people to think beyond themselves is asking too much.

  • Inflation was on the rise before Trump left office. It continued under Biden for the first two years of his term, but he managed to get key legislation passed in that span of time that has measurably reduced inflation. It’s still not back down to what it was pre-pandemic, but we are leading almost every other western democracy in that metric. It really is incredible that people are giving Biden shit for the economy when he is actively fixing the problem, and it shows that the Democrats have a tremendous failure in their ability to do effective messaging.

If it doesn’t feel like inflation has been improved under Biden, that’s because the price you pay at the gas pump or the grocery store has more to do with what they chose to set their prices at than what the current rate of inflation is. The “vibe economy” is real, but they aren’t casting the blame for it at the right people. For once, government did it’s job. Who knows if the current trend will continue under Trump, but given that he set off the massive inflationary spending spree by injecting a ton of cash into a booming economy with stimulus checks, I imagine he’s not going to care much about the fundamentals of a healthy economy and will instead do whatever makes his donors happy.

  • He won’t have to. He’ll just have his own DOJ appointee dismiss the federal cases against him. This will 100% happen on day one of his presidency. I have no doubt in my mind that he already has a person in mind for it and they will be his first appointment after his swearing in.

For the state cases, he doesn’t need to do anything, they won’t result in a sentencing verdict that can’t be appealed before he takes office, and the state courts cannot prosecute a sitting president.

The best case scenario is that the state cases that he can neither dismiss nor pardon himself for will resumed at the end of his term in January 2029. That’s a long fucking time to wait for justice, and even then, we won’t know if he will even serve time for it. The presiding judges could die or retire and sympathetic judges could be appointed in the meantime. The states could flip to be controlled by MAGA AGs and decide to drop the cases even while they are paused.

The likelihood of this guy seeing the inside of a jail cell before he dies is almost 0%.
