  • Well I think you should speak for yourself only because there are people who are currently vegan who do miss aspects of an omnivorous diet. And there are tons more who want to join us but need this stuff in the market before they’ll be ready to make the change. You dont have to put this stuff on your plate for you to uplift it and reduce animal agriculture. Let me repeat, you dont have to want to eat it yourself for you to get really excited that these things exist for your fellow humans.

  • Friedrich gets into that towards the end of the piece. He points out that the total investment into these things is just low. They’ve only gotten a few billion dollars total and thats for both R&D and production. Its hardly enough to get off the ground for a whole new product. Which is exactly where beyond and impossible are, just getting off the ground.

Cultivating meat isnt too bad because its borrowing from an existing field of science, doctors have been growing tissue for surgeries for years. There are life long experts in that. Food imitation is brand new and has to be developed from scratch.

I have confidence that both will succeed with time and funding. Expect that every doubling of production will yield a precipitous drop in price paired with a rise in quality.

  • Ive read all of the cosmere at this point. I started with Stormlight archive and Im glad I did, its his strongest writing, and I honestly just think people become better people if they internalize the messages of those books. If you need a shorter starting point, Emperors Soul and Warbreaker are amazing standalones that require no prior knowledge, spoil nothing, and provide context to later developments.

  • The most powerful model to communicate, imo, is talking about it as 4 pillars of Capitalism, Patriarchy, White Supremacy, and Colonialism. When education is based on the interweavings of those forms of injustice, it is hard to come to any conclusion other than joining in class solidarity as a piece of the puzzle.

And frankly, I most want to talk to those who are already aware of one or two of these pillars as they are most ready to accept the whole picture. Sure, those people are frustrating, but realistically, they are a fundamental part of the Overton funnel towards the left.

  • If the wealthiest intersection on the planet cant even pay lip service to an issue like that, how is anyone going to take the issue seriously? “You must reduce your comfort for the greater good, but the advertisements stay on” is callous and puts one of the least important things above the needs of the many. Its like saying emergency vehicles only on the roads in a snow storm, but then you see an ice cream truck driving around. Clearly, the priorities are not straight.
