I wouldn’t consider a country that cannot manage its own power supply “successful.” I suspect the US would be more willing to help if Cuba stopped being a one-party authoritarian state that sides with America’s geopolitical enemies, namely Russia.

Edit 2: Cuban grid operators are blaming an influx of air conditioning units (residential & business) as being the stressor that brought down the grid. This story does not jive well with those here arguing the problem is US trade policy regarding the island nation. Cuba did not run out of oil. It can get equipment to operate the grid. Heck, Turkey send Cuba seven mobile power plants to assist the grid. None of it is working because Cuba has a serious brain drain issue. Educated people leave Cuba. The grid likely failed because the people keeping it running left the country.

I think they believe that images of living things become idols. If I recall, Amish have similar concerns, but they don’t try to enforce it outside of their community. Russian Orthodoxy was a fake church created specifically to prevent Orthodox bishops from rejoining union with Rome after the Council of Florence. They arrested the bishops and elected their own, creating their own “church.” Although it was eventually recognized by Orthodox Churches, it took a lot longer than you’d expect. Now they are in schism against the rest of Orthodoxy, so perhaps the Council of Florence can finally find resolution. Never trust Russian Orthodoxy.

IMO, it is going to come down to how much the Republicans get people to vote early. The last election went bad for them because people didn’t trust voting by mail and there’s always a contingent of people who intend to vote on election day but don’t make it for one reason or another. Political junkies should also watch the weather forecast in close states. Bad weather probably favors Democrats in this election. This is a change from the 80’s and 90’s when Democrats were less likely to show-up during bad weather.

Would it be much of an issue if we insisted presidential powers were limited to what they were when the Constitution came into force? Today’s presidents (both parties) greatly exceed the powers of Washington and Jefferson.

A canal through Israel would involve about 15x the amount of digging as did Panama. Doubling the capacity (Suez + this suggested canal) would cut revenue to less than half (doubling capacity but also introducing market competition). But the operation costs of Suez would also be much lower. Plus all that traffic would create a security risk because it would introduce a new mode of importing terror into the country. It isn’t going to happen. This is the stuff of conspiracy theory.

The engineering would be implausible and unprofitable. The terrain does not support that type of plan.

There’s self-hosting that’s low risk but does remove some convenience. For example, I use a offline password manager. I keep a Veracrypt container on my computer that hosts that and a few other important files. When I make enough updates, I’ll throw a copy into Dropbox so I can save access it elsewhere. The disadvantage is that I cannot update the primary version from one of those other devices but, for me, that’s not really an issue.
