Sibling gay bars in Austin, Texas have been censored by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, over images of drag queens posted to their accounts. The Instagram account of one of the bars, Rain on 4th in Austin’s gayborhood, was shut down altogether, before being restored weeks later without explanation.
The bars’ experience is another example of the shortcomings in judgment displayed by AI agents deployed by Meta and other social media companies to police content on their platforms, and the kind of bargain users like gay bars strike by relying on tech giants to promote their real-life spaces.
Stop using Meta.
Emigrate from NaXas.That’s cursed.
One commenter on Oilcan Harry’s post explaining the bars’ haphazard social media censorship wrote, “Can’t wait for MySpace to come back.”
And this person thinks MySpace would do it better? It wouldn’t; this story is merely another example of Masnick’s Impossibility Theorem.
The real thing to be nostalgic for is independently run forums, not MySpace.
I really want mesh technology to get good enough to do bbs’s again
This is deliberate, not ai error
