Kael’thas is genuinely more entertaining, and has more depth in the frozen throne than what blizzard did to him in TBC; even the naga, who first feel monstrous in the sentinels campaign (the first campaign of the frozen throne), appear instead as desperate people in the blood elf campaign who appreciate their link to the blood elves (the descendants of the highborne).
TBC really did these guys dirty.
Illidan, Vashj, KT and the rest of the crew were victims of Blizzard’s rule of cool mentality which they regret even to this day. They forced that entire faction into the villain role just to “catch momentum off of WoW’s success” and to say “Dude, wouldnt it be sick if we fought Illidan”.
The Legion expansion pack was able to re-contextualize Illidan’s villain arc into him essentially holding back the player raid and Maeiv while his army of Demon Hunters acquire the Sargerite Keystone. Kael’thas went rogue sometime before the TBC timeline started.
Vashj didn’t get her own storyline until the Shadowlands expansion pack. I didn’t spend much time doing the Maldraxxus storylines but one thing that stood out to me was that she chose to keep her naga appearance even in death which I thought was cool. And she hangs out with The Lurker Below’s (the sea monster in SSC) soul in a big lake from time to time which is super cute.
Sometimes I wonder what Warcraft’s story would be like if it wasn’t an MMO lol. Felt like they could actually tell a story properly from start to finish in an RTS :(

Definitely much, much, much shorter
Unfortunately I missed all story content past Cataclysm, and even cataclysm classic I quit before the deathwing raid released
The shadowlands expansion pack seems like it would have been very interesting to be honest, as was legion (I’m kind of peeved only elf races can be demon hunters, but I still would’ve wanted to play one)

The part of me that hopes in vain is hoping Blizzard decides to try milking WoW from the angle of releasing it as a single player experience as well (maybe limiting it to classic content at first, and always keeping it multiple expansion packs behind retail), allowing for tons of mods so people can add bots to make the experience feel like the MMO but by yourself
Damn, Wow must have truly rancid storytelling if TFT looks good in comparison. TFT isn’t as good as ROC (TFT spends too much time with elves going from night elf to blood elf/naga to forsaken which has an undead elf as a leader. Plus, Sylvanas reminds me too much of Kerrigan). ROC is not as good as BW (I didn’t care for any of the characters except for Arthas. Plus, Archimonde getting owned by wisps is constantly memed on for a reason).
BW
BW?
Also I won’t say the story is fantastic, but the character of Kael’thas was very interesting; I was originally of the mind that he was just a cartoonish villain; even lady Vashj comes off as someone who’s simply desperate, and her seeing a kinship with the blood elves was not something I expected
Brood War I assume
To be fair Kael’thas appear in WoW when he’s basically already a demon puppet then is raised from dead in even worse shape. Also large part of why antagonists in WoW usually are so carricatural is because the Horde has to still look like lesser evil and palatable allies.
Honestly I think some story beats would be very impactful if they kept some of the more awful characters and just let the alliance be evil sometimes, like having alliance leaders like Garithos; you don’t have to have your super heroic generic protagonist like Anduin all the time; sometimes the guy you work for just kind of sucks (I still remember it was hilarious when you do the optional quest in one of the Sylvanas missions where she’s working with Garithos, where you save the dwarves and they mention how much they detest Garithos)
This is most wow lore sadly
