Still posting from inside the soda cave. I’m getting cold now but I’m so hydrated and refreshed otherwise.

I have the opposite problem. I’d like there to be more pointless immersive rpg and survival mechanics. The problem is that Rockstar is the only company that does games on this scale but that scale itself necessitates them being accessible to the lowest common denominator so most of them are just there for show. For reference look at all the stuff that you can do in Red Dead Redemption 2 which is ultimately completely pointless with no gameplay consequence.

Basically they should replace Rockstar’s creative leads with weird German or Eastern European nerds, or the sorts of people who make ultra hardcore STALKER mods

      • same. i loved all the rpg shit in SA. i also enjoyed the weird little home invasion mechanic that was mismatched for difficulty and reward.

reminds me of some story i saw once about some kid playing vice city and doing the taxi missions. his dad or uncle walked in and watched him play for a little while, saying, “is this a sequel to Crazy Taxi?”

eventually the kid got out of his car and blew away some cops before going on a rampage and the dad says, “wow, they went in a different direction with the sequel, huh?”

games i enjoy the most and for the longest have a bunch of weird extra shit going on with them. minigames, rando interactions with npcs, little enterprises, customizations etc.

the very idea that there is some kind of “buy groceries” mechanic is intriguing to me. can i throw food at people? can i eat food off the ground? can i sit in a dumpster and get covered in wet garbage slime? will people get mad at me for being disgusting?

All the weird life sim mechanics were why I loved Deadly Premonition so much. Shaving, washing your suits, checking the weather and getting a cup of coffee every morning, getting your car fueled and washed, fishing… granted, those were about as consequential as similar stuff usually is in Rockstar games, but still

They have nothing else to add because they don’t care about game mechanics, so they’re going to keep adding more detail to their crime-ridden Second Life game.

As they said they cut it for “ease of play” I would assume that the downside was that it was not easy to ignore

        • could you really? seems like one would have to want to die from never eating, because $1 at any of the fast food places also restored health and the frequency of eating to recover health would make one fat unless they opted for the more expensive salad.

          • After getting the message which is kind of:: “You are starting to feel hungry and losing energy”, you will start to lose “Fat”. When fat is zeroed down, you will start to lose “Muscle”. And when that is zero as well, you will lose your health 1 unit per one game hour (1 minute) and that will cause an awkward death. You can start starving by not eating, drinking, picking up health package or saving a game for 3 in game days (72 minutes).

JSS had a whole video on this idea years ago back when RDR2 released. That people were forced to crunch and spend so much time crafting these overly long and drawn out animations and mechanics that in the end while really cool, barely had any impact on the game. Who cares about a full animation skinning an animal, or if the horse’s balls shrink if it means that people don’t get to go home after work on a regular basis?

Also who cares at all? Simulations and games are usually a bit distinct.

If you approach a game trying to break the illusion, constantly peering behind the curtain, and this ruins it for you then that’s on you. Games are allowed to be made of cardboard backgrounds and fakery. It’s not playful to most people to watch hands move around cans of beans or horse poo roll down a rock.

Soccer doesn’t have breaks to file taxes because “you do that in real life”.
