What makes you say that? I’ve driven (but not owned) an ID3 for the last 3 years and it’s pretty great. Only major criticism I have is that the controls are too heavily touch-based with a lack of physical buttons. But the actual driving is wonderful.
Poor software, poor pricing, still are dragging their feet in bringing their big named products into the EV world. EVs are sidelined to the ID badge. At no time have I even thought of Volkswagen as an EV that I would want to buy.
This might vary between markets but at least here in Germany, their pricing is very competitive. You can currently get a base ID3 for 29,760€. There are very few if any similar sized EVs for that price. Software is okay, not the sleekest you can get for sure, but it does its job. They’re the second most successful EV brand after Tesla here. I assume if you’ve never thought of them as something you’d want to buy, you’ve also never driven one?
I don’t think they totally suck at it, but I agree it’s ridiculous they insist on all these esoteric models and brand names instead of what made them — beetle, rabbit/golf, Ghia, Passat. Hell, bring back the Thing! It also sucks that all they ship in North America are the giant SUVs when the ID3 would fill a niche here (reasonable price and range).

I have never driven one. Also ID3 is not available here so only I D 4 which is not very competitive here in the USA.
Need the battery plant in North America to go online before we get proper VW EVs on this side of the pond.
