Poem
“Hornless”
I remember the world of divinity
When bovine reverence developed me
The divine touched my sisters, my brothers
My family from before and my family from the now
It pushed the herd forward
Then darkness enveloped us
And divinity was nowhere to be found
They desire to kill us
DESIRE TO KILL US
They dissect the reddened hair of tenderness
They take nutrients from spotted patterns
The blackened, brownish haired are driven mad
Forced to defy their gentle nature
They watch destructive impregnation
As they kill us
THEY KILL US
My children grow large and healthy
Enticed by open pastures of yellow and green
Lurking eyes on the fence, keeping stock
Nothing but future carnage is all they see
As they entrap my children on the butcher’s block
Then they eat us
THEY EAT US
My son runs his anger through reddened flags
Goring nothingness in his rage
He receives rapiers in return
My daughter follows in my hoof steps
Bellowing at nothingness in her despair
She receives infanticide in return
Then they despise us
THEY DESPISE US
I am
The Hornless Matron
I am
Hiding beneath the earth
I am
Crying helplessly
As my family churns in the belly of the beasts
Those disgusting beasts
Disguised as humanity
Endless consumption reinforces their mind
Until they rot and fall into earth
Where I wait
Wait for the day my children are free
Where endless pastures sleep at day’s end
When golden grass covers all
Or when shadows flow under verdant trees
And when rivers make brand new bends
But today, my children fight
They’re tough as cud
Training to spill a matador’s blood
Showing the might of a trampling herd
Gathering ancient wisdom from above
Kicking cruel abusers through the night
Meeting daybreak to strengthen Ur
The ancient aurochs smile with love
Until the end,
I cling to my speckle of divinity
Waiting for the day I can let go
I remember when humanity was full of love
Perhaps it still is
I remember my daughters and my sons
I remember when I was a mother
I remember when I was myself
And we lived free amongst the grass and dirt
That last spark of divinity
Is the last piece of the puzzle
Soul leads to heart and heart leads to mind
And mind leads to action
Heed the words on the terminal
Humanity’s heart is the only key to liberation.
And I am Hornless.
