I recently ran into a cool video essay about “anti-Lovecraftian” fiction. Basically cosmic horror without the racism and xenophobia and approaching it from a different perspective. Anyway in that video essay I learned about a show called The Summer Hikaru Died, and I will not spoil anything even the first setup episode.

I think you’d like it. This image reminded me of it in a way.

We are running a socialist 40k ttrpg campaign. The platyers started by volunteering for the local planetary guard, but have slowly turned to helping the rising peasant rebellion where they can.

I think I will check out The Summer Hikaru died, it looks nice.

We are using Fate. It has its problems, but we found it good for including narrative elements, but still keeping it somewhat traditional. The game itself and the story is developing well and the drama between the characters is harrowing because of the dark backdrop of a hopeless civil war on top of the 40k setting. We are using a lot of narrative combat and it really works as well. Besides the indie systems, we draw a lot of inspiration from the nordic roleplaying tradition. It is not as serious as those games tend to be, but borrowing the elements we like enhances the drama of the game.

All in all it is a good way to play with some serious topics, but keeping in a sci-fi settings makes it possible to keep a distance to it. And we have a lot good discussions about the game outside game. Besides that roleplaying is the most immersive and collective form of entertainment I know. This campaign is a weekly thing and gives it a sort of TV-series feel, but I actually kind a like that and it is a good way to meet up with people and relax together.

I do have my eyes on both Powered by the Apocalypse and Forged in the Dark, if I am going to make another campaign though. There will come a new version of Apocalypse World soon(ish) and Band of Blades seems absolutely brilliant for dark fantasy military stuff, besides being an excellent game on its own.
